Free Music Search and Conversion Tools

The emphasis on this thread is on "Tools" for Music Search & Conversion. We have an entirely different thread devoted to the - "Comprehensive List Of Free Music Websites".

Ok, here we go:

Use Gracenote for accurate information

Before you start your search for music, it might be a good idea to plug the song, artist, or album into Gracenote to make sure you get the right information you are looking for. Gracenote's technology is used by ITunes and other large platforms for accuracy.

But if you aren't sure what you are looking for, you might want to plug in some info and search in one of the following websites:

Discogs - a community built data base

Amazon Music, Wikipedia, AllMusic or one of the search engines (Google, Ask, Dogpile, etc) to narrow your search.

Lifehacker does a nice, brief overview in their article "Download & Listen To Free Music On The Web". It's a good place to start before reviewing the tools below.

Discover Music While You Search

The Good Musician takes a look at 19 websites that help you discover new music.

Jogli (Beta) - Jogli scans other websites such as YouTube for any free existing music and music video clips, and then indexes the music in order to enable an easy and efficient search. They claim to have "access to the largest free inventory of music on the Web, consisting of approximately 12 million albums and half a billion songs."

Soundflavor - Soundflavor provides users with song information, videos, and recommendations. Users can browse and filter their searches by genre, decade or subject. Mashups include artist bios from Wikipedia, news headlines, flickr photos and store links. A "One-Click Playlist" that generates a list of 25 songs and a "Any Requests?" button - you can generate your own playlist while you're browsing.

GrooveShark Lite - Grooveshark is an online music community that rewards you for sharing, reviewing, and discovering new music. They claim to offer millions of songs to stream.

Tagoo (Beta) - New Russian MP3 search engine. In addition to being able to search by artist, song title, album, or filename, you can also specify a bitrate range (e.g., "No less than 192kbps range") and duration. MP3s can be previewed via a small embedded Flash player, along with links to the original page where it was found, and a clipboard to share or catalog. The search engine also suggests other artists you may like, and provides a "download playlist" option at the bottom of every search results. Tagoo encourages users to mark search results with a "mood," which powers colored areas like "Fun" and "Romantic." What's not to like

SkreemR - Provides links to the music you are searching for in Digg fashion; also rates the music quality

BeeMP3 - The site lists the top 10 search requests in the US, Europe and the world, while you search for a specific request.

Dilandau - Search engine for music that allows you play, imbed or download songs on the fly.

Songza is a search engine for music that streams songs as soon as you click on the fly. It also allows you to create and organize playlists.

Blubster.com is a popular online p2p filesharing web community.

SeeqPod shows what others are searching for on the fly while you search and requires Flash to work. Seeqpod has a sister website,

Streamzy, a "media search utility (powered by Seeqpod) that allows users to search for media, stream it, and create and save playlists.

Deezer is a community driven search tool that pulls up multiple versions of a song if they are available. It also allows you to upload songs and imbed them in other websites.

Just Hear It - Type it a song or artist and JustHeartit does the rest. License fees are paid by the website, so it's legal. I did a test - it's amazingly fast, and it brought up a ton of stuff.

TheSixtyOne is a search tool like Deezer that allows you to search for mp3s across the web, but is similar to digg in its setup, in that users can rate the music. Some songs are available for download, others are available for purchase via Amazon. You can also embed songs at your favorite websites.

Songerize - Type in the artist or song and play.

MusicMesh.net - Type in your favorite artist's name and MusicMesh pulls up related albums, complete with track listings and YouTube videos, which you can play, user reviews, Wikipedia entries and other recommendations.

MusicIP and LivePlasma are similar to MusicMesh, in that they will pull up related music albums based upon your search.

SonicX is an MP3 search engine. The site also posts the 100 most popular music artists which are searched in the last 24 hours, complete with links to their songs, as well as the sound quality of the tunes.

Sideload.com is a website that aggregates popular free music tracks on the web that have been sideloaded into Oboe, the online music locker from MP3tunes. You can search for your favorites or use the alphabetical bar.

• ITunes 'Just For You' and Amazon make recommendations based upon what you buy.

TinySong - Type in a song's name and the site furnishes you with a link to an MP3 that you can send to a friend.

The Big Guns

Although I cover the following more extensively in our Comprehensive List Of Free Music Websites thread, I often cut to the chase and go directly to the following websites to search for specific new tracks or bands:

El.bows, The Hype Machine, Totally Fuzzy- music search engines that index audio files on blogs across the internet, with an emphasis on indie music. Pop Librarian is the latest blog aggregators.

The Social Communities

IMeem (absorbed by Myspace), Last.FM

MySpace

Mog

Stereogum and the rest of the blogs...

Happy searching and listening!

Pure Video (Searches and lists videos by artist)

Find Videos

ScreamR

And if your favorite video has been deleted at Youtube, you can probably find it at DeluTube

Nool Music - Aggregator of Classic Rock Videos

ZonTube is an Amazon/YouTube mashup for finding videos for pretty much any song that has one.

Google Hacks is a pretty good tool, but IckStuff is much more versatile and also will search for music, images, and more.

Tools For Getting Music From Music Blogs

1) RadioBlogDownloader - Probably the most convenient tool of its kind

2) Pandora's Jar - Hak.5's guide to getting music off of Pandora and LastFm

3) Instructables has put together a 3 step tutorial on How to get songs off a radio blog

step 1get the url

copy the url with the radio blog on it which should be something like

http://www.site.com/radio.blog/

step 2 opening the folder wit the music in it

now u got the url which looks something like

http://www.site.com/radio.blog/

so u just add "sounds/" at the end of it to get something like

http://www.site.com/radio.blog/sounds/

then go to this url

step 3 final step: downloading and playing the files

now you will see all the songs in this folder..

download all the ones you like..

ok so when u download them you will notice that you can't play them and thats cause they end with the extension .rbs

just rename them and delete .rbs and replace it wit .mp3 and they should be normal working music files

its as easy as that :)

4) • FreeMusicZilla and OrbitDownloader, both Windows tools, will also do the trick.

"AnywhereFM lets you upload your entire music library to their servers using their uploader application (for not that's free), stream, and manage it using a very iTunes-like browser-based Flash player. It also has a great social aspect that allows you to stream music from other users' libraries."

Read Adam Pash's overview at LifeHacker - or visit Anywhere FM and try it out.

Social FM works pretty much like Anywhere FM. But it comes with an ITunes Coverflow-like navigation.

Hearing Aids

These aren't free, but...

My music world was opened up this week with the discovery of 3 computer apps which enhance your listening experience. I'm on a Mac, but I believe these are available for Windows, too - google them up

Hear is a repackaged version of a Mac app called OSS 3D. from the developer of MacAmp (now defunct) and WinAmp. Hear will improve your movie and audio experience, and offers a ton of various sound settings based on the music genre you are listening to. Not sure that it's worth $50, but it does improve your sound quality multi-fold. If your interest is peaked, you can read a full review over at ViewFromTheDock

SRS IWow - This is a $20 plug in that improves the sound of iTunes music quite significantly — especially your laptop speakers. It also simulates 360 degree sound if you use headphones.

These MP3 Surround Players, however, are free

All4MP3 offers a free Franhofer IIs MP3 Surround Player. You can test drive some sounds with it right HERE. It brought a huge improvement to the sound on my Mac without surround speakers. Another BK forum member on Windows didn't notice any difference - you be the judge.

Volume Logic - My favorite sound enhancing tool by far is Rogue Amoeba's Volume Logic, from the makers of AudioHiJack Pro - I have been listening to music with this tool non-step since I acquired a demo. There's a rumor that Apple may have acquired the company, because Volume Logic suddenly disappeared earlier this year, and without explanation. But if you search around the web long enough, you can probably find a demo to download - here's a Guideon how to install it if you do. If you use ITunes or Winamp, you should be using Volume Logic.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
