Row over a music site stands in the way of Russian membership of a global trade body

A RUSSIAN music download website stands in the way of the country’s long-cherished ambition of joining the body that governs world trade, it emerged yesterday.

The United States has singled out the site, allofmp3.com, as an obstacle to its support for Russian membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

I figgered they would shut down on Sept 1 due to changes in the copyright law in Russia but it didn't happen.

they are perfectly legal according to the Russian law. They are illegal according to the American law (charge the customer as much as possible)

That's not what I have been reading since summer of 2004. Russia passed new copyright laws then but gave websites until Sept 1 this yr to comply. Unless they think they have found a new loophole they will soon have a problem.

I think allofmp3 is disgusting. So disgusting in fact that today I downloaded 6 albums.

How bout that Billy Thorpe album, Kiwi?

there is no copyright violation on that site. They just sell the albums cheaper

Everything I have ever read indicates that no artist or songwriter outside of Russia has ever been paid.

Allofmp3 is a bunch of thieves. They should charge a dollar a track and give 90% of that money to the big record companies such as Sony, BMG and the others.

In which case the record companies would steal the money and no artist or songwriter outside of Russia will ever be paid.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
