Universal Music pressuring YouTube, MySpace

It seems that the dumb people over at Universal don't like free advertisement accuse YouTube and others of copyright infrigment.

Reuters:

Universal chief executive Doug Morris described video site YouTube and News Corp.'s social networking site MySpace as "copyright infringers" during a Merrill Lynch investors' conference speech on Tuesday that was closed to the press.

"The poster child for (user-generated media) sites are MySpace and YouTube," said Morris, according to a transcript obtained by Reuters. "We believe these new businesses are copyright infringers and owe us tens of millions of dollars."

He added, "How we deal with these companies will be revealed shortly."

"His remarks strongly suggested the company was planning to take legal action in the near-term to either prevent the illegal use of their content on these Web sites or to ensure the company is compensated for the use of its content," Jessica Reif Cohen, analyst at Merrill Lynch, wrote in a note on Wednesday.

Slowly but surely these great geniuses are going to put the last nails in their own coffins. Bye bye greedy conglomerate record companies - you dont understand what your customers want.

I doubt anyone's doing their homework and actually reading blogs like this..but if you are, and you are a record company, listen closely: there is no difference between listening to music on a computer than there is on the radio. The probem is that you are not keeping up with technology and worse yet havent come up with a working business model. Rather than take it out on music fans, you need to work with the cd manufacturers, the equipment manufacturers and the ISPs, and the advertisers...and figure it out. And maybe you should pay attention to what the movie companies did--convert to DVDs and charge people less for your product. Stop shoving all this crap pop music down our throats - if you were really paying attention, you would realize that indies, when combined altogether, are twice the size than you are - and they make better music, too - invest your money there and maybe you will start winning some music fans instead of losing them.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
