Animated comedy adventure Cars has driven Pirates of the Caribbean off the top of the box office charts after three weeks at the top, Screen International said.

Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Paul Newman, Cars tells the story of a talking racing car named Lightning McQueen and his journey to a big race in California.

Elsewhere there was little change in the chart's top ten.

The Johnny Depp swashbuckler Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which also stars Keira Knightley, dropped to second pushing romantic comedy The Break-Up starring Vince Vaughan and Jennifer Aniston, into third.

Superman Returns, featuring Brandon Routh as the man of steel, dropped to fourth with Stormbreaker, an action adventure about a 14-year-old boy recruited to join the British secret service, falling to fifth.

Garfield 2, featuring a plot about the animated feline's antics in England, was in sixth ahead of animated animal comedy "Over the Hedge".

Horror thriller Stay Alive, about a group of teenagers playing an ultra-realistic videogame, was a new entry in eighth with The Wind that Shakes the Barley, falling to ninth.

Bollywood film Omkara, an interpretation of Shakespeare's Othello, was a new entry at number ten.
