Geek girls pose to lift IT appeal

Female IT professionals have posed for a provocative calendar to try and shake off their industry's geeky image and encourage young women to consider a computing career.

Gold Coast-based IT expert Sonja Bernhardt said the motivation for the calendar was the rapidly declining number of women taking up computer studies and careers.

"Five years ago, women made up 25% of the IT industry worldwide and now it's down to 16%," Bernhardt said.

"The method in the madness is to get to a broader audience so that people can see that it's not nerds in the IT industry.

"They are full bodied, fully intelligent, fully socialised women who absolutely love what they do."

The IT Screen Goddesses Calendar features women from the IT industry posing as movie sirens, such as the bikini-clad Ursula Andress in the James Bond movie Dr No and the rose petal scene from the movie, American Beauty.

"Statistics show us that one of the biggest barriers to entry is the perception of the industry," Bernhardt said.

"We want to completely smash this by doing this in a parody way.

"We've been there, we've done that with traditional programmes and we now know that it is time to do something dramatically different to appeal to a broader audience and to generate a healthy debate."

The models came from all mainland Australian states as well as South Africa, Finland and Sri Lanka. They range in age from 20 to 60 years.

"Each month includes a biography of the woman featured that month, as well as a significant date in technology history, covering leading technology women," Bernhardt said.

The calendar can be bought online by visiting www.itgoddess.info.

Bernhardt hopes to sell 100,000 copies worldwide and profits will be used to promote IT careers for females.

I suppose that's a great way to prove that anyone, regardless of gender, can be a professional. It's also a great way to prove that aesthetics and sexuality are very important factors in the work place and determine who gets hired.

Way to go. Nothing like turning BACK the clock on equality.

"The method in the madness is to get to a broader audience so that people can see that it's not nerds in the IT industry."

Exactly, because as we all know, "nerd" is a very well defined and legitimate term and it's very easy to classify someone as such. It's also important to remember that it's "so not cool" to be too interested in "things".

I guess I'll stop here because frustration and a sense of hopelessness have just flooded my thoughts. Nothing about this makes any sense. It's just a stupid and counter-productive gimmick on many levels.

May the "brain-childs" of this die unexpectedly in some sort of horrible accident. Here's a few of my personal favorites:

-Crushed by giant dinosaur statue at putt-putt golf course

-Hit by ambulance driven by Zombie Dale Earnhardt Sr.

-Death by Carrot Top

-Drowned at Sea World

-Blunt force trauma from a large trout

-Mauled by Roy while Siegfried masturbates

-Lethal injection of steroids courtesy of Barry Bonds

-Midget suicide bomber (thrown in out of poor taste)

-Capped by Redneck4sure

-Capped by Dick Cheney

-Capped by Zombie Lee Harvey Oswald (since it's obvious now that Zombies have risen from the graves).

-Capped by Captian Kirk

-Capped by KAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!

-Slip and fall accident (one of the most pathetic ways to die)

-Rabies

I have more but this will just about cover it.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
