Sports Illustrated has today revealed that Halima Aden will be the first Muslim model to wear a hijab and burkini in the magazine's swimsuit edition.

According to Sports Illustrated, the 21-year old Somali-American model was born in Kenya at the Kakuma Refugee Camp, where she lived until the age of seven before moving to the United States. For the SI Swimsuit spread, Aden returned to her birth country for the historic shoot at Watamu Beach.

“I keep thinking [back] to six-year-old me who, in this same country, was in a refugee camp,” Aden told SI during her shoot. “So to grow up to live the American dream [and] to come back to Kenya and shoot for SI in the most beautiful parts of Kenya–I don’t think that’s a story that anybody could make up.”

“Having Halima as a part of SI Swimsuit is yet another example of the range and scope of the type of beauty that exists,” says MJ Day, Editor of SI Swimsuit. “Her participation and inclusion further highlights the brands commitment and belief in supporting women to own who they are and what makes them unique and ultimately reaffirms what our messaging has been — that you are worthy.”

Congratulations to Halima Aden for being the first model to wear a hijab and burkini in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue! It's inspiring to see how she is breaking down barriers and furthering the representation of Muslim women in the fashion industry. Her courage and commitment to staying true to her beliefs is truly admirable and I'm so happy to see her featured in such a high-profile magazine. We can only hope that her success will continue to pave the way for more diversity in the fashion industry and that future generations of Muslim women will feel empowered to embrace their faith and culture without fear.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
