The Hollywood buzz was "Watch out for 'Cars'!" And this time, the buzz was right.

All of Hollywood will be watching — and not through the rear view mirrors of their Beemers and Bentleys, but through the front window. This is a great animated feature, and a lot of fun.

Paul Newman Talks About the Animated Family Film, Cars.......

Racing Enthusiast Paul Newman Provides the Voice of 'Doc Hudson' in Cars......

The brainchild of Pixar's John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug's Life), Cars is the story of a hotshot race car named Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) who finds himself in the sleepy town of Radiator Springs while on his way to one of the biggest races of the season. Stuck in Radiator Springs for a while, Lightning McQueen is befriended by the town's odd collection of citizens - including a 51' Hudson Hornet called 'Doc Hudson' (Paul Newman) - who teaches the young upstart there are more important things in life than racing.

New vehicle for Paul Newman.....

He's won Oscars, raced cars, been on President Richard Nixon's enemies list, helped found the famed Actor's Studio and established a food company to fund charities.

So what is 81-year-old Paul Newman doing playing Doc Hudson, a crusty old automobile with blue eyes for headlights in animated film Cars?

Cars wins box office race.......

Cars, the latest animated feature from newly merged Walt Disney Co. and Pixar Animation Studios, zoomed past The Break-Up, starring real-life celebrity couple Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, to finish first in United States theatres over the weekend.

Cars, the cinematic tale of a talking hot rod named Lightning McQueen, brought in US$62.8 million ($99.3 million) during its opening weekend. The Break-Up, a surprise hit romantic comedy that actor Vaughn helped write, slipped into second place with US$20.5 million in its second weekend.

The Friday-to-Sunday gross for Cars was the third-biggest opening for a film from Disney-Pixar, which has had a string of hits that have wheeled in more than US$3.2 billion worldwide.

Cars, featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Helen Hunt and racing icon Richard Petty, is the seventh film from the team and its first collaboration since Disney acquired Pixar in January for US$7.4 billion.

Chuck Viane, Disney's president of distribution, expects the film to cross the US$100 million mark sometime next weekend.

The Cars opening weekend lagged behind the US$70.5 million posted by The Incredibles, which chronicled the adventures of a superhero family, and the US$70.3 million take from the fish tale Finding Nemo - the highest-grossing Disney-Pixar film ever, which reeled in more than US$865 million worldwide.

X-Men: The Last Stand, the fantasy film starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry, was third with US$15.6 million and has so far brought in US$201.7 million - making it the first film of the year to break the US$200 million mark.

EW Review: Pixar's 'Cars' a classic.........

Having fallen in love with a bunch of computer-animated, anthropomorphized vehicles who express emotion with eyes made from windshields and smiles from metallic front grills, I do believe the exemplary Pixar team who made the beguiling comedy adventure "Cars" could draw a mote of dust and a pair of socks and turn them into characters worth caring about.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
