The Raconteurs - Live at Amoeba Music Store, Hollywood

Recommended Posts

LA's rock and roll crowd and D.A.I.C. lifted the cobwebs from their eyes to make it out for the Raconteurs impromptu free concert in Hollywood, at the unGodly hour of 11 in the morning, at Amoeba Music, or what Brendan Benson calls the best record store in the world.

Located catecornered across from Hollywood's premiere movie theater, The Cinerama Dome, Thom Mount's LA Film School, and Jack 'n the Box, Amoeba Music, according to the NY Times, "has an inventory of about 800,000 CD's, LP's, cassette tapes and eight-tracks, some of them used. The selection at Amoeba, which calls itself ''the largest indie record store on the planet,'' can dizzy even the most ardent browser wondering which 70's Nigerian Afropop compilation to buy." NY Times It's a pretty impressive record store - the owners love music are love to push things that haven't been heard. Back to topic...

The line formed quickly, and a swarm of attendants efficiiently hustled the crowd inside, in between the record racks and surrounded by wall to wall pop posters.

The Raconteurs--the new supergroup formed by Jack White and Brendan Benson, consists of Benson's Cincinnati band, with Jack Lawrence on Bass. Brendan Benson and Jack White on guitars, Patrick Keeler on drums, and Dean Futilla on keyboards--were in the mood to play and in a festive mood.

They ripped through 7 songs of their new album "Broken Boy Soldiers", highlighted by the Zeppelin-inspired title track, the pop tune and lead track off the album, "Steady As She Goes", and a couple blues tracks, where White played the slide guitar like the devil incarnate, still possessed two days after 6-06-06. And the crowd was in to it every step of the way. White dedicated the last song to all the Mexicans and Hispanics in the audience, noting that we are all human, and then invited the crowd to join him and the band at their next free show that evening, at the Amoeba Records Store in San Francisco. Pretty cool, huh.

They're a pretty decent band, and you can sample some of the cuts yourself here:

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
