BAGHDAD — Abu Musab Zarqawi, leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed by a U.S. airstrike early this morning in the town of Hibhib near Baqubah, said Hussein Maliki, a spokesman for Prime Minister Nouri Maliki.

The spokesman said Zarqawi, blamed for leading a relentless campaign of suicide bombings and beheadings, was severely injured in the attack and later died. Iraqi forces were the first to discover his body, Hussein Maliki said, and were able to identify him using pictures and fingerprints.

Unfortunately, George Bush's Iraq is so far gone that the killing of one man won't stop the bloodshed. There are so many organized and independent terror groups now that nobody can even say who the leaders are.

there are a thousand Zarqawis waiting in the wings in this vicious never-ending circle of violence.....which will only end (and perhaps not even then) when the west gets its collective arse out of the middle east....and stops its`meddling in the affairs of sovereign nations.... :glare:

I'm beginning to think the United States is better off that way. Aside from being selective about what incidents to get involved in (and the altogether fabrication of the Iraq war), the U.S. has also ignored dire situations that probably should have been higher priority for a nation claiming to be "the world's police" or the "world's protector". Rwanda specifically comes to mind.

However, in taking a stance of non-involvement, the world's biggest military power wont be of any use to even genuine situations that require force (since the U.N. is only limited defense at best and doesn't play offense, if I may borrow from sports terms).

There are some downsides to not having the help of developed nations with strong militaries. Sometimes intervention is necessary.

Exactly, Zarqawi was nobody until Osama dropped out of the picture actively. The next guy will ride Zarqwai's martydom coat-tails right to the top and the "Where-is-Waldo" game in Iraq will start all over again. As long as thses guys can recruit at the bottom there will be always someone waiting to takeover for the top guys.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
