Beatking Music Awards 2005

Hopefully this is the first time this has been presented to the members of BK, I encourage everyone to take part in this musical related activity to "honor" the music released in 2005.

The list submissions will be calculated. Regarding the one-choice awards, if there are enough similar choices amongst the voters, I'll tabulate those also.

It might take awhile to think of some stuff, but don't give TOO much of a fuck about it. It's a dumb little internet excuse for an award show, and this post was composed and saved away over the past few months.

IF THE SMALL CATEGORIES ARE TOO MUCH, AT THE VERY LEAST, JUST DO THE TOP 10 ALBUMS

Herego:

Top 10 Albums of the Year

I will be tabulating the submissions, and the ranks are weighted (#1 album gets 10 points, #10 album gets 1 point, etc.), and there will be an official "Beatking Top 10 Albums of 2005" list. Therefore, incomplete and "in no order" lists will not be counted. You can edit all you want up until midnight Dec. 31, when all scores will be submitted and tabulated. As you can see, there is a separate EP category. No compilations, re-issues, mix albums or live albums will be accepted. Also, no soundtracks or various artists releases.

Top 3 EPs of the Year

Same deal as the top album list; incomplete lists will not be counted (if you're having trouble thinking of EPs to list, download a few already-listed EP picks, you have until Dec. 29 to pick three).

Top 3 Worst Albums of the Year

You have to have heard the whole thing, so don't just put down Ashlee Simpson or Cradle of Filth, unless you've listened to every song from the album. It's an honor code thing, I guess. Same rules as the above lists.

Live Recording of the Year

Doesn't matter if it's a live album or a live EP, just the best live recording released this year.

Debut Album of the Year

First album from a band released this year. Self-explanatory. Note: They can have as many EPs released as they want, this is about their debut fell-length album.

"Second-Outing"(Sophomore Release) of the Year

An artist's second album that improves upon their first album the most. Don't just choose a band who released their second album this year, it has to be an album that you think is a significant improvement from their debut. Note: They can have as many EPs as they want, this only concerns full-length albums.

Disappointment of the Year

This isn't the same as worst album of the year. This is a disappointing album you were waiting for a long time to listen to, or just an old-fashioned case of a good artist releasing a bad album. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a bad album, it can just be something you weren't expecting.

"Just A Sign of the Times" Album of the Year

Most publically dishonest release [ex. actors/celebrities releasing forgettable albums]. There are many to choose from this year, just turn on the boob-tube and pick something.

Soundtrack Album of the Year

Best soundtrack to a movie that was originally released in 2004. Motion picture scores also count.

Vocal Performance of the Year

Album/EP with the most diverse and solid vocal performance. Can also be a collaboration of vocalists on a particular album.

Spoken Word Comedy Album of the Year

Best live stand-up comedy album released in 2005.

Music DVD Release of the Year

Just the best DVD released by a band or someone that releases music. It can be a concert DVD, music video single, compilation, or instructional video.

Music Video of the Year

Doesn't matter if it gets airplay, just a music video from an album released in 2005.

NOTE FOR ALL SONG AWARDS:::: If it is from a live album, it can be a track that's never been released before, but not something released before 2005 and played live. (Ex. A live jam track can count as your Instrumental Track of the Year).

Album Opener of the Year

A track that is a perfect example of how to start an album. Something that comes out and immediately hooks you into the recording and makes you want to keep listening.

Album Closer of the Year

A track that ends an album and leaves you feeling satisfied with what you just heard/makes you want to listen again (while inducing chills/tears/vomit/etc.).

Brutal \m/ Track of the Year

The track that most makes you want to harm other humans while listening to it. That, or just thrash your head around throughout the song.

Soothing Track of the Year

The track that either has the most heart, or just relaxes you the most of any song this year. Doesn't need to be a ballad; it can be ambience, noise, metal, rap, rap-metal. Anything that makes you calm/emotional.

Instrumental Track of the Year

In short, best track with no words. An instrumental track is hard to make perfect, so listen closely to the whole song, rather than just a section you like.

Guitar Riff of the Year

Most catchy or bone-crunching guitar riff that either makes you want to cry, hit rewind, or punch people in the FACE.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
