The roots made my top 5 :)

The Roots are the future.

Why? Because they are Rap's version of The Greatful Dead or Phish... they are forever on tour. In ten years they played over 3000 live shows.

Screw spoiled TRL brats.

2Pac and Biggie have gotten to be cliches. Its rather annoying. Jay-Z has a monotone and the beats in his songs are boring (except for "Moment of Clarity", that was a sick beat).

My favorite has to be Fabolous, although T.I. is a close second. Lyrically Fab can hold a candle to anyone (check out his new song with Akon "Change Up" for proof) and T.I. you can just bump all day long!

Eminem is pretty damn good too though...good storyteller like Scarface. Bone Thugs are fun to listen to also.

I'm not sure if you are looking for individual lyricists, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned the original white rappers. In my mind the Beastie Boys blow Eminem out of the water. I really like Mos Def. Anyone remember Cypress Hill. Maybe not the best lyricists, but a hell of a rap group. Biz Markie was pretty good.

Saying who the best 5 rappers are is a very complicated question. There are so many different forms of rap, like Immortal Technique takes the cake for underground/political rappers. On the other hand, you have have Biggie who could hold a verse for hours but differs from the rap made to day.

Then again there is also marketability, the most marketible rappers today would fall between Jeezy, Lil Wayne, or T.I. They have decent lyrics and appeal to wider audiences. Then you have groups like N.W.A. and Wu-Tang which really have no on who stands out (except maybe Ghostface) but spit fire together.

But if you're talking about just lyrical skills, mine would be.

Lyrics

1. Chuck D

2. Biggie

3. Immortal Technique

4. Nas

5. The Saurus

Influential

1. Tupac

2. Biggie

3. Ghostface Killah

4. Chuck D

5. KRS 1

Groups

1. Run D.M.C.

2. N.W.A.

3. Public Enemy

4. Wu-Tang Clan

5. A Tribe Called Quest

Nice breakdown...

Now... you could add to that even more by splitting your "lyrics" category into "lyrical content" and "lyrical delivery."

BTW: an oft overlooked lyricist - Treach from Naughty by Nature - the dude could turn a phrase.

Sounds familiar!

You know.... another group I like is The Coup...

They tend to be pretty political (Boots Riley is a socialist).

Boots spends most of his year teaching... and makes music or tours when he feels like it.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
