"Throughout the 1970s and '80s, Berlin was home to a number of musical pioneers, such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Nick Cave," you begin. "In the decade and a half since, the Germans have repaid the world for this rare and privileged musical education in the most spectacular way: by allowing every album David Hasselhoff has released in their country since 1989 to go platinum.

"Did the Germans learn nothing when Bowie and Cave were living in their country?" you ask. "I've heard of war guilt, but this is taking things to ridiculous extremes.
