Who should control the Net?

The US doesn’t much like the idea that the Net should be run by a league of nations: the Cheney / Bush administration would rather control things itself.

And, "The United States lost its only ally [at the U.N.’s World Summit on the Information Society] late Wednesday when the EU made a surprise proposal to create an intergovernmental body that would set principles for running the Internet," professor Ed Felten quotes the Herald Tribune as saying.

“Currently the U.S. Commerce Department approves changes to the Internet’s ‘root zone files’, which are administered by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or Icann, a nonprofit organization based in Marina del Rey, California.”

I see no difference Mal

The fun of the internet is that it is the electronic wild west. A monument to free speech and what humans can do if they work together for the sake of innovation and not money.

Now we have big companies moving in and controlling the development of Internet2, using sponsership to push their own agenda.

The importance of that comes down to how different the internet and internet2 are. Are they two completely different technologies, incompatible with each other? Is the the Internet 2 a tack-on, making it more likely that any corporate control will be rendered worthless after a solution to it is found?

Guest .::BeatFactory::.

No matter what side you're on, a fragmented internet is one of the most retarded things you can do as far as the flow of information goes.

America will keep control. Just look at the Project for the New Americn Century. Controlling the internet is a key goal alongside starting a bunch of wars in the middle east.

The neocon thing came through again with the presentation in which america announced politicians would be keeping control. "our president this....our president that".

ZEIG HEIL MINE FUHRER..sorry... Our President was on something stupid like 10 out of the 12 slides.

I like the idea of making ICANN independent. That way america gets to keep precious control and the rest of the world will be assured that corrupt politicians are not pulling any strings. Things can stay much as they are now.

Perhaps even give ICANN a big say in where they will be based, so if the government does try anything on..bye bye!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
      You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
      But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
