I've been playing Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.com). It is instant VPN software without even the need to forward ports.

You can search people's shared windows folders as if they are shared on a LAN.

You can even play multiplayer games across the internet as if you are on a LAN.

By far the best solution for friends/family file sharing I've found.
