Happy Labor Day Weekend, Everyone

Tough to say.

I have a tendency to feel real guilt if I have unfinished work to do so I haven't relaxed much lately. I did hand in my pro bono stuff yesterday so I'm feeling quite free. And it's the last weekend before school starts again.

Good luck MI. Let us know. :)

This weekend... I work then I'm going out to Fort McCoy to see the guy. It's exciting and unexpected. I was really thinking I wouldn't see him til he was back, perhaps next Christmas... and that's just really depressing. It'll be a short trip, but worth it. No questions asked.

rainbowdemon, shawn... nothin goes by you two.

All kidding aside though, it sank in yesterday that I wasn't going to see him until MAYBE next Christmas. Yea, we only started dating (again) earlier this month, but him and I have been friends for a long time (1997). His "tour" began August 24, and fifteen months from then is Dec. 24, 2006.

He is the second person I know to go to Iraq. Definitely the closest. I can't stand it.

I hope he'll be safe.

Glad to hear the little potato girl doing more than working at the accursed gas palace on a weekend, and perhaps building something good in her life.

As to Mal the cat, I wish you good luck....but I'd feel a lot better about your chances if maybe you had some negatives of the business owner and his love sheep at a bed and breakfast holiday.

Nothing happening here, wife babysitting/housesitting for her daughter this weekend so I'm going it alone. Labelling long-ago-burned discs and videotapes that have been piling up, and getting more and more depressed at the indignities piled upon the poor, tired huddled masses which my country used to care about.

Well, I went back to work this past week. 3 days of USELESS hitwall meetings and in-services is a great thing to come back to lol.

On a much more positive note, we FINALLY closed on the house yesterday afternoon! :frog: :frog: :frog: Someday I'll start a thread about the travails of dealing with f'n realtors, but now I'm just relieved that we're finally M-O-V-I-N-G, YEAH BABY!!! So this weekend we are moving all our stuff that we packed two weeks ago when we thought the closing was a week ago. (living out of boxes is just GREAT) Tara's down there now washing and vacuuming; I am going to finish putting that 3-ton trailer together this afternoon (its almost all sanded and primed, hafta put a coat of enamel on it then bolt down the new planks, which are all painted and ready to go on). Then I'll take the kids and our beds apart and truck them down there. The two oldest have already been going to school there, which is about 2/10 of a mile from our new house. And this will cut my commute in half, from 43 to 21 miles (each way)...nice now that the price of a gallon of gas is approaching $3.50 here as of today. And I won't have to drive in Providence morning/afternoon rush hour anymore either.

After living in the same place for 20 years, it was somewhat unsettling to relocate 3 times in less than 1 year. Hopefully this is the last time we will be moving for a while. :)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
