Green River - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)

The third Creedence Clearwater Revival album was their first classic LP, a tightly wrapped package of blistering guitar, roadhouse-rhythm snap and John Fogerty's backwoods howl. The lengthy jamming on CCR's previous LPs is gone, and Fogerty has found his lyrical voice -- radio-ready essays in frontier living ("Green River," "Lodi") and working-stiff politics ("Bad Moon Rising," "Wrote a Song for Everyone"). As producer, he makes it all sound so gritty and easy, too - like CCR had cut it all in a toolshed. "All this overproduction is funny to me," Fogerty has said. "It doesn't make it mo' betta when you add more junk."

Total album sales: 3 million

Peak chart position: 1

CC Reviseted (sp?) is going to be at Grand Casino Mille Lacs in Minnesota next week. I'll be at the show mostly out of curiosity than anything else. CCR claims Stu Cook & Doug "Cosmo" Clifford as original members of the band...and they are. Without John, though, I suspect something will be hugely missing. A few years ago VH1 did an hour special about CCR & John Fogarty with only Jonh being interviewed. He is still carry an enormous grudge about what happened to him back in the 70's. When CCR was induscted into the R & R Hall Of Fame, he refused to perform with the other surviving members. During the VH1 show, he reffered to the "new" CCR as a horrible lounge act. I wonder if John will ever "get over it" and make peace.

Ive met saul zaentz a number of times... he's a very gracious and warm guy. i tried to picture him as the 'zaentz cant dance' guy that Fogerty wrote about and it just doesnt compute. I think the reason that CCR fell apart is because of John Fogerty. He may have them most talent in the band, but he comes off as a pompous ass...

No, CCR was virtually a one man show and Fantasy Records gave them such a heinous screwing contractually that it soured the relationships within the band. The other band member, John Fogerty's brother, has passed on.

CCR is one of my favorites 4sure. I have most of their stuff and most of Fogerty's after CCR. I don't believe they ever had a number 1 billboard hit. They had several songs that got to number 2 on the charts but never number 1.

I agree, Green River should be MUCH higher on the Rolling Stone album chart than #95. To me, Creedence Clearwater Revival was the only band from the 60s and certainly the only American band to remotely challenge The Beatles. John Fogerty wrote 20 songs that are American classics: Proud Mary, Green River, Up Around The Bend. The list goes on. It is a pity about the mess between Fogerty and Saul Zaentz. I do not know much about it. Fogerty probably has been a pompous ass. I am sure he made big bucks from his creations. He is a songwriting legend, and people know it. I was home on leave from the Army for Christmas, 1969. I was obsessed with Creedence. I played their albums over and over. It drove my girl friend crazy.

It drove my girl friend crazy.

think about it this way--how many rock classics did saul zaentz write? absolutely none. now how many did fogerty write? dozens?

ok now how many albums did fogerty sell? millions. what did he get for it? a pittance and the loss of publishing rights on all music

what is there to like about saul zaentz? like most record industry types, he's a human leech. he attaches himself to truly creative people, then sucks out every penny he can. that's what zaentz can't dance is all about. a peanut selling chicken farmer with no talent of his own makes money off the backs of others. i suppose that is capitalism, but it's just plain wrong

zaentz is at it again, http://film.guardian.co.uk/lordoftherings/...1286422,00.html

collecting 20 million on a movie he had nothing to do with

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
