Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley (1956)

In November 1955, RCA Records bought Presley's contract, singles and unreleased master tapes from Sun Records for $35,000. His first full-length album came out six months later, with tracks drawn from both the Sun sessions and from further recording at RCA's studios in New York and Nashville. "There wasn't any pressure," guitarist Scotty Moore said of the first RCA sessions. "They were just bigger studios with different equipment. We basically just went in and did the same thing we always did." On tracks such as "Blue Suede Shoes," that meant revved-up country music with the most irresistibly sexy voice anyone had ever heard.

Total album sales: 500,000

Peak chart position: 1

John Lennon said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing." He was right. At least, there was no good music. Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry & Jerry Lee Lewis are at the heart of every record produced in the last 50 years. But it was Elvis who made it possible. He had the looks, movements and charismatic appeal that drove girls wild. He scored 18 #1s in the 1950s and 60s. Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, All Shook Up, Too Much, Jailhouse Rock, Treat Me Nice & One Night were electric. Never before and not since has this kind of sexuality been captured by pop music. The Army slowed Elvis down but after his discharge, he turned out great love songs like It's Now Or Never & Can't Help Falling In Love. Yeah--fantastic record, that Elvis Presley Elvis Presley. The CD reissue adds some amazing bonus tracks, as well: including a (nearly) definitive version of Lloyd Price's "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" that almost reaches the greatness of the original. Great album art too.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
