Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix (1968)

"I'm getting myself personally together in the way of music," Hendrix said on the release of his third album. "Some tracks are getting very long. That's why you can only get about twenty tracks -- our type of tracks, anyway -- onto two records." The longest track here, "Voodoo Chile," lasts for more than fifteen minutes; with the interplay between Steve Winwood on organ and Hendrix on guitar, it's also one of the best. Ladyland showcases Hendrix's further explorations of the guitar, but two of the finest tracks are the most direct: the explosive "Crosstown Traffic" and the definitive version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower."

Total album sales: 2 million

Peak chart position: 1

I fucking love this album... I actually own a copy (remastered) after I killed my friend's cassette tape... this album is beautiful; it ranges from poppy rock songs to majestic, orchestral numbers... each song is infused with its own dynamic character... I am always surprised where the album takes me when I pop it in the player.

What the W'nut says is true....I bought this vinyl double album when it was new....over 30 years later it still has the power to transfix the listener. My vote goes to this as the best non-Beatles album ever....a lot of people will throw out the Beatles qualifier I added.

My dad recently read a Ken Kesey book and asked me to get him an album which had rip-roaring guitars...I recommended this and he dug it..

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
