Microsoft said yesterday that the new version of its Windows operating system would be named Vista and available for commercial release in late 2006.

The first of two test versions of the program will be made available to corporate technology managers on Aug. 3, the company said. The new version has been known as Longhorn since development began more than four years ago.

The name was chosen after eight months of research and focus groups because it "captures the idea of clarity," the company said.

Why would MS bother with 8 months of focus groups and countless hours of research just to choose some dumb ass name like "Vista"?

It sounds like a brand name for cheese..........probably swiss cheese.

It's not like they need to sell the damn thing. They don't really need a marketing strategy. What a waste of time.

They own the OS world when it comes to home/workstation users.

They should have just stuck to non-names or numbers.

I have nothing against XP really (as far as Microsoft products go).

However, this new version of Windows will take away a person's ability to use their computer as they see fit. Fair use will be thrown out the window (pun intended). All kinds of "anti-piracy" measures will be in place so that you won't be able to do much.

I won't be installing this.

yeah...that's the only reason i'm weary of the new OS. That article about the monitor a while back got me thinking...I can just envision when this thing comes out and half of everyones downloaded goodies don't work.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
