The Who

Live at Leeds was recorded on Valentines Day - 34 years ago at Leeds University in England.

The Who had just concluded a successful year-long tour of the United States and were returning home conquering heros.

They decided to put on a live concert for their loyal hometown fans and make a record in the process.

Somewhere between "Mod" and "Tommy"... The Who had become an accomplished hard rock band.

The purpose of making an album ..was to put that energy ....amp squeaks and all, on vinyl.

And that they did.

For years to come it was the album to test stero amplifiers with.

From Mose Allison's ..Young Man's Blues ...to the anthems... My Generation and Magic Bus, they demonstrated that at that moment in time they were the best rock band out there.

Originally released in a plain brown cover with studio markings on the records label..it proported to be the 'actual concert'.

But for years rumors circulated about missing material not included on the original album.

Finally about 2 or 3 years ago... rumor became fact and a 2 CD set Live at Leeds Complete was introduced.

....More material ...different song sequence....etc.

But wait....the story dosn't stop there.

It still wasn't "Complete."

Yes Folks ..running around in P2P land (in high bit-rate 256) ...is the bootleg of the actual concert.

Yup...2 more songs ...a slightly different song list ...and unedited ...longer versions of My Gereration and Magic Bus.

If you are a diehard Who fan... you will appreciate the subtle differences and some annoying amp feedback of the 'boot'.

Hearing the uncut version of Magic Bus is a pleasure in itself worth a download.

So next time the neighbors are gone ....turn on that 200 watt amp.... thats been in the garage...plug in your 3 way column speakers and turn this mutha up!!

Enjoy a moment or two in rock history as it originally was recorded..

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
