partly true...

the first -kind of- electronica group was Pink Floyd but the real revolution came with Kraftwerk, Can, Residence AND Tangerine Dream...

...along with plenty of Berlin groups at the time

Others to mention... Mike Oldfield, Yellow, Jean Michel Jarre...

Well, there was the Switched on Bach guy, who had the Moog synthesizer...but, I love Tangerine Dream. In fact, Geffen Records allowed me to use some of their music from the Risky Business album for a documentary I did. TD are still actively recording... :good job:

tangerine dream are not too bad..i have " phaedra " in ogg format.....hawkwind, however were amongst the first real pioneers of electro and space type rock...they were neck and neck with pink floyd in the late 60`s and most of the 70`s.....hawkwind`s dave brock, harvey bainbridge, del dettmar and dik mik were pioneering the use of analogue synthesisers well before the likes of tangerine dream and kraftwerk and Amon Duul II....the album " levitation ", recorded by hawkwind at Roundhouse Studios, Chalk Farm, London in July & August 1980 was also one of the first to use digital synthesising techniques.... :)

Legends can be now and forever.....

There's no doubt that Tangerine Dream were among the first wave of pioneers of electronic music alongside other artists like Kraftwerk and Hawkwind and Wendy/Walter Carlos but as is often the case with innovations, lots of different people were working with similar ideas in different places to lay down the foundations of electronic music for the next few years.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Brian Eno who arguably is the single most influential figure in theorising about electronic music particularly in reference to what he dubbed "ambient" music. His influence is still felt across that scene and can be clearly heard in the likes of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and even newer artists like Marconi Union and Biosphere.

At the end of the day it's where the music is going, not where it came from that is important.

Robert Fripp's collaborations with Brian Eno date also back to the early 70's; he also along with Eno should be given some props for pushing the early envelope.

Another influential electronic music pioneer, though he came along a bit later in the 70's, was Gary Numan. Numan's Replicas was arguably the beginning of new direction in fusing the pop and electronic music genres.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
