Stepping up to Bat........Who was the best Batman?

Keaton was cool; Clooney was cobblers. Bat-fan Charles Purcell rates Christian Bale's predecessors.

ADAM WEST

You have to love a man who can wrestle a rubber shark and keep a straight face. West's TV series Batman was more Camp Crusader than Caped Crusader. The signs the show had its tongue firmly in its cheek weren't hard to miss: the obsession with prefacing everything with "Bat"; the "Kapow!" signs that flashed during the fight scenes; Holy whatever! He even had his own dance, the Batusi. Don't laugh: West and co-star Burt Ward hooked up with more Bat-vixens than you or I will see in two lifetimes. The funniest Batman.

MICHAEL KEATON

Keaton was everything you'd want in the Dark Knight. Brooding, intense and with more issues than an Oprah guest, his Batman was a raging cauldron of black emotion. You really believed he was angry in his soul when he slugged the Joker. Team him with gothic director Tim Burton and you have the two finest Batman movies yet (Batman and Batman Returns). Keaton scored a fancy new costume, too. Adam West never had rubber abs like that.

VAL KILMER

Kilmer was the only Batman I cheered when someone punched him. He walked through Batman Forever like a drunken Lurch from The Addams Family. Kilmer was upstaged by everyone in the film, from Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones) to the Riddler (Jim Carrey). The chemistry between Kilmer and Nicole Kidman was barely hot enough to reheat a cocktail sausage. Batman Forever was further tarnished by the presence of the Boy Blunder, Robin. I thought we all voted to kill Robin off years ago when they did that comic-book poll. Or was that Superman? Never mind - let's top them all, including director Joel Schumacher.

GEORGE CLOONEY

Hey, I love George Clooney. But as Batman? Stick that batarang into my heart, why don't you? Clooney was far too mellow a dude to play the Dark Knight and not funny enough to play the clown in the West mould. And what the hell was Batgirl doing there?

I dressed up as batman when I was 6 or 7 or something during a school party. I think I was made for that role...

Can you write the subtitles?

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
