Finally got back from my road trip across the country with my nephew...he is still on the road winding up the coast from LA to Seattle, and will probably send me some pics which I can infuse back in this thread. Anyways, Im going to add a little bit at a time.

Backtracking...

I left Saturday a week ago, flying on SW from LA and landing in Pittsburg ($107 :) ), where I visited my niece and her husband, who is going to Carnegie-Mellon for grad school in their hi-tech arts/architectual school for design... He has a nice computer setup--he uses a screen for a wall, which is how we looked at Beatking ;)

Carnegie Mellon is right next to the University of Pittsburg and they share some facilities. So lots of young folks around and lots of clubs and bars and restaurants and fun things to do. This city also had the cheapest (quality) food on the road 8 oz cheeseburger platters for $3.50 with sweet potato fries.

Pittsburg is a pretty cool town which used to run by the steel industry. Since that industry left for China, half the town's housing opened up, which means its a buyer's market, and they've cleaned up the city quite a bit...

It no longer looks like this....

wait a minute--he has a screen AS BIG AS A WALL AND YOU DINT TAKE A PICTURE OF IT? what's wrong w/you? (about a month before i met pet man in 2000, i had this great dream that my flat in brooklyn had huge screens on the walls (you couldn't see any wall, not even in the bathroom) and technology where i just pointed my (cyber-implanted) finger to the screen (arrows superimposed when i wanted them) and could surf the Internets :)

From Pittsburg, we picked up and drove a 24 foot U-Haul up to my hometown of Carlisle, PA for the big move. My dad is moving to Seattle, and our job was to deliver family heirlooms across the country. Here is Old West (built in the 1780s), the main administration building of Dickinson College; DAIC grew up in a row house directly across the street

Here's a little info on the revolutionary town (George Washington actually slept in a couple of our churches...

Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the seat of Cumberland County, was settled in 1751 and incorporated in 1782.  Dickinson College, a liberal arts college chartered in 1783, just a few days after the American Revolution ended with the treaty of Paris as the first college the new United States of America.

Here's a pic of Dickinson Law School, which just merged with Penn State

welcome home

Thank you. That's what the local bartender said at The Gingerbread Man (the G-Man), our local watering hole. I took my nephew down for a beer and paid the price 'cause I had a hangover the next day....which meant..

time to work. Here was our friend for the next week:

We loaded up the van with family heirlooms and paintings and took off back to Pittsburg. My nephew supplied the playlist, which started with The Thievery Corporation. Here is what the PA Turnpike still looks like :) Unfortunately, a lot of those beautiful farm houses are starting to get eaten up be urban sprawl :reallymad: But there are still quite a few around...

In Pittsburg, we dropped off an oversized mahogany bookshelf, and then it was off to an eaterie in Little Italy before we hit the road again. Can you believe meatball sandwhiches only cost a buck and quarter?

I was in Oakland, Little Italy and Squirrel Hill....me thinks. Since Pittsburgh lost over half its population when the Steel Industry left, you can get big 3 story row houses for a song (well under 100 grand!)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
