I once funded an Edgar G. Ulmer film festival--gave the t-shirt to Johnny Depp's agent... But I dont think I could ever sit through one of Edgar's movies

you really should watch 'detour,' i saw it as a kid on 'million dollar movie' (same damn film shown 5X/day for a week) and never forgot it, then i taped it off PBS in the early 90s, it's great stuff that makes you think. or not.

It's a great movie, with one of my favorite cheesy actors, Tom Neal, in the lead role. Neal was an interestingly scummy guy....an early day Robert Blake. Check him out:

i've found that people who think too much dig 'detour' better than those who don't. nb: this is not a dis; just an observation. IMO those who overthink (like me) are fucked in the head.

no Citizen Kane. no Casablanca either.

We had to watch a movie from the 40s on our own time about every other week too. "Detour" was actually one I watched on my own.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
