Esa-Pekka Salonen

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced on 8 February 2005 that it is extending the contract of its Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen by two years, taking the partnership through to the 2007/8 season. The contract extension also includes an 'evergreen' clause, indicating Salonen's and the orchestra's desire to continue the relationship beyond 2008.

'I feel privileged to work for this incredibly exciting symphonic organization, where there is unlimited potential for invention', says the Finnish conductor. 'We are witnessing a sociological phenomenon, a completely new music culture being born in Los Angeles. New and diverse audiences are flocking to Walt Disney Concert Hall. The high profile the orchestra has achieved puts us at the very center of the cultural community. There is no better or more exciting job I could be doing at this moment.'

The news coincides with the announcement of the orchestra's 2005/6 season. Details online.

That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
