Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The National Hockey League and Players' Association are meeting once again in Toronto Wednesday, as time continues to run out on the chances of a season.

The time and location of the talks have been kept secret by both sides, as they attempt to keep out distractions.

As was the case last week, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Bob Goodenow will not be part of Wednesday's meeting. The union will be represented by president Trevor Linden, senior director Ted Saskin and outside counsel John McCambridge. The league will have senior vice president Bill Daly, Board of Governors president Harley Hotchkiss and outside counsel Bob Batterman on its side of the table.

There were reports over the weekend that the league was preparing a new proposal to present to the players, but there is not expected to be any new offer at Wednesday's talks.

This latest event comes after the two sides held small-scale discussions last week. Those meetings were initiated by the efforts of Linden, but failed to bring the parties together.

I'm glad it's done.

Perhaps someone can form a league that can financially survive and doesn't have overzealous athletes who think they should be paid baseball money.

They can't and they should realize that. I think it's time for a shakeup. I like Hockey, and I want there to be a professional league in the U.S. and Canada (jointly), but the current NHL cannot do it.

Sorry to the hockey fans, but I'm with Yoda. I haven't had an interest in hockey since the league let in so many expansion teams in the 90's. I feel it just watered down the talent. All I watch now is basketball and I have to say you'll never see a sport with so much talent.

Take Basketball's 3 lowliest teams:

New Orleans

Atlanta

Charlotte

They carry:

N.O. --> P.J. Brown - Jamal Magloire - Jamal Mashburn - Baron Davis

Atl. -->Tyrone Lue - Antoine Walker - Jason Collier

Char. --> Brevin Knight - Ekema Okafor

Even these lowly teams carry substantial star power, and after this year's draft they'll carry more. Every team in the league carries 2-3 players that are capable of being seen as bona fide stars.

(And nobody has suggested using a glowing ball to help the dimwited fans follow the ball on tv.

I LOVE THIS GAMETm

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
