QuickSilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails

This is one of my all time favorite rock albums. The Quicksilver Messenger Service was one of the leading psychedelic San Francisco bands of the late sixties, and they often appeared at the Filmore West and the Avalon Ballrroom along with the Dead and the Airplane and were best-remembered for their instrumental jam music. Dino Valenti *(who penned Get Together) formed the band in 1965, along with guitarists John Cipollina and Jim Murray. While Valenti was serving an eighteen-month jail sentence for drug possession, the pair added guitarist Gary Duncan, drummer Greg Elmore and bassist/singer David Freiberg. Valenti was never asked back. Check out this album, and in particular John Cippolina's guitar work on Who Do You Love.

* A side note: Valenti signed away rights to it when he was imprisoned . The Youngbloods recorded it and gave the composer credit to Chet Powers, a name they made up. The song would go on to become one of the most famous anti-war mantras of the time.

Dino Valenti was the singer with the highly distictive voice, ususally echoed to great effect. He was a memorable character from the hippie generation...last week I ran across his only solo album and it's an absolute gem of the era.

And now, three years later, this link will take you to see and hear Dino Valenti and Quicksilver Messenger Service doing Fresh Air...one of their best.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
