A friend and I were discussing and listening to some of our favorite TV theme music, and I played him some very different versions of songs that he hadn't heard and I would like to share some with you jazz and tv show fans I'm not going to post titles I'll let you guess the songs.

The song originally appeared on Ingram's 1983 album It's Your Night, released on Jones' Qwest Records label. It was released as a single in late 1983, peaking at #19 on the U.S. charts in 1984, and #12 on the UK charts in 1985, and has subsequently appeared on several of Ingram and McDonald's greatest hits albums as well as various 1980s compilation albums. The performance earned the duo a 1985 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
According to the liner notes on Michael McDonald's greatest hits, the original title and chorus was "Yahweh be there," but they felt that the explicitly religious theme would affect its hit potential so they changed it to "Yah Mo" and let the listeners interpret the meaning for themselves.

songfacts.comThis was initially released in 1981 on Patti Austin's album Every Home Should Have One. In the spring of 1982, it peaked at #73 on the US charts. Months later, the song found new life when it was used in the ABC soap opera General Hospital for romantic scenes involving Luke Spencer (played by Anthony Geary) after his wife Laura temporarily left the show. ABC got lots of calls and letters about the song, and Warner Brothers Records decided to re-release this as a single due to popular demand. It hit #1 in the US in the early part of 1983.I was a a junior in H.S., so this song brings back some fond memories. I wonder where that girl is now...

Young MC did have another hit song after the year long chart run of Bust A Move, though nowhere impact of his first hit Principals Office did do some damage on the charts and was seen everywhere.
He is still making music althought not on the scale he was. Want the here some check out his MySpace page

Blue Magic-In the rain [1983]
The original version is from The Dramatics in 1972. It went to #5 on the pop charts and stayed at #1 for 4 weeks on the R&B charts. I think this group did an excellent cover and IMO, it's better than the original. There's no official video but you can listen to it here.
Hey Droop great post one of the best R&B/Soul groups of the 70's. Not sure I agree with there version being better. The Dramatics version is a classic anything done after is only a compliment.

"Magic Carpet Ride" is a rock song written by John Kay and Rushton Moreve from the band Steppenwolf. The song was initially released on the album Steppenwolf the Second. It was the lead single from that album, peaking at #3 in the US, and becoming the band's second-biggest hit, surpassed only by "Born to Be Wild". The single version differs noticeably from the album version with a different vocal take by Kay used for the first verse of the song and differing instrumental balances. The single version is also much shorter than the album version, with a running time of 2 minutes and 55 seconds (the album version is 4 minutes and 27 seconds long).
"Born to Be Wild" is a rock song written by Mars Bonfire and made famous by the Canadian rock band, Steppenwolf. It is often used in popular culture to denote a biker appearance or attitude. The song is sometimes described as the first heavy metal song ever written and is also said to have inspired the name of the emerging heavy metal genre; although these claims are disputed, the song's second verse (which refers to "heavy metal thunder," though it is either a reference to the weight of the motorcycle or a powerful car) contains the first recorded reference to "heavy metal" in the context of rock music

The single was a top 20 U.S. hit in 1973. The song is featured in the movies Air America, Dazed and Confused, Jack Frost, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Days Of Thunder and in the video game Prey. It was covered by R&B group Tavares (1975) and Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline (1995). Hartman himself covered the song later in his career.
The 45 version is a different recording than the LP version, but both versions clock in at 3:08.

Bob James (born December 25, 1939 in Marshall, Missouri) is a smooth jazz keyboardist, arranger and producer.
Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured soloists, who add a jazz touch to his sound (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.).Two of James' songs – "Nautilus" from 1974's One and "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" from 1975's Two – are among the most sampled in hip hop history. "Nautilus" has been most famously sampled in Eric B. & Rakim's "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em", Run-D.M.C.'s "Beats to the Rhyme", Ghostface Killah's "Daytona 500" and Jeru the Damaja's "My Mind Spray" amongst many others and the notes of "Nautilus'" bassline were played on a keyboard for Slick Rick's "Children's Story".

Callen Radcliffe Tjader, Jr. a.k.a. Cal Tjader (July 16, 1925–May 5, 1982) was a Latin jazz musician, though he also explored various other jazz idioms. Unlike other American jazz musicians who experimented with the music from Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, he never abandoned it, performing it until his death.
Tjader primarily played the vibraphone. He was also accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani, and the piano. He worked with numerous musicians from several cultures. He is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Although fusing jazz with Latin music is often categorized as "Latin jazz" (or, earlier, "Afro-Cuban jazz"), Tjader's output swung freely between both styles.
He won a Grammy in 1980 for his album La Onda Va Bien, capping off a career that spanned over forty years.
His biggest success was the album Soul Sauce (1964). Its title track, a Dizzy Gillespie cover Tjader had been toying with for over a decade, was a radio hit (hitting the top 20 on New York's influential pop music station WMCA in May, 1965), and landed the album on Billboard's Top 50 Albums of 1965. Originally titled "Guachi Guaro" (a nonsensical phrase in Spanish), Tjader transformed the Gillespie/Chano Pozo composition into something new. (The name "Soul Sauce" came from Taylor's suggestion for a catchier title and Bobo's observation that Tjader's version was spicier than the original.) The song's identifiable sound is a combination of the call-outs made by Bobo ("Salsa ahi na ma ... sabor, sabor!") and Tjader's crisp vibes work. The album sold over 100,000 copies and popularized the word salsa in describing Latin dance music.

Tower of Power is a 10-member horn-based soul band from Oakland, California. Tower of Power has released 18 albums over the years (Compilations and regional variations not included)
In addition, their horn section has become well-known as a backing unit for other artists. The ToP horn section has appeared on many artists' recordings, including Little Feat, the Monkees, Santana,Elkie Brooks, Elton John, Linda Lewis, RAD. (Rose Ann Dimalanta), John Lee Hooker, Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship, Heart, Huey Lewis and the News, Spyro Gyra, Lyle Lovett, Poison, Phish, Toto, Pharoahe Monch, and Aerosmith. Tower's early song, 'So Very Hard To Go' was featured in the soundtrack of the 2002 film City of God.
The TOP Horns' most notable touring was as part of the Top 40 Pop group 'Huey Lewis and The News', during the mid-80's. They joined for the 'Sports' tour, to support Huey's highly successful album of the same name, recorded on several of Huey's next albums, and Huey enjoyed the experience so much that he later hired other horn players to continue the bigger sound he had achieved with the Tower Horns. - Huey has collaborated in a few of Tower's song writings.
Tower of Power has also made special guest appearances on the albums of other major recording solo artists. In 1993, the band was featured on Luis Miguel's album Aries, in a cover of "Attitude Dance" titled "Que Nivel de Mujer". Most recently, Tower of Power has been featured on Josh Groban's Awake album, during an instrumental break in "Machine".

Candy Dulfer (born 19 September 1969) is a Dutch smooth jazz alto saxophonist. She started to play saxophone at the age of six. She has had her own band, Funky Stuff, since she was fourteen. Her debut album Saxuality (1990) received a Grammy Award nomination. Over the years she released nine studio albums, two live albums, and one compilation album. She has performed and recorded songs with several other musicians, such as her father Hans Dulfer, Prince, Dave Stewart, René Froger, Van Morrison, and Maceo Parker. For the Dutch television series Candy meets... (2007), she interviewed musicians she worked with.

Grand Funk Railroad (also known as Grand Funk) is an American rock band. The Grand Funk Railroad lineup was highly popular during the 1970s, having sold over 25 million records and selling out arenas worldwide and having been awarded four RIAA gold albums in 1970, the most for any American Group that year. The current Grand Funk Railroad lineup uses the nickname "The American Band", from their hit song "We're an American Band". A popular take on the band during their heyday was that the critics hated them, but audiences loved them. Contrary to the name, the band is not a real funk band; but rather an attempt to pun the name "Grand Trunk Railroad" as that railroad went through Flint; although some sources cite the band's "The Loco-Motion" cover song as a funk track.

I remember seeing them perform "When Smokey Sings" on tv once upon a time.
Smokey sings was a really nice good and a nice tribute to a legend.

Gary's Gang was a disco group, who just missed having a Top 40 hit, when their lone Billboard Hot 100 entry "Keep on Dancin'" hit #41 in 1979. The song went top 10 in the UK, making number 8, and made #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, along with the songs "Do It At the Disco" and "Let's Love Dance Tonight," the latter of which would be used as the sampling background track to Soulsearcher's 1999 #20 Club Play hit "Can't Get Enough."
The group also enjoyed minor European success with the single "Knock Me Out".
The group, based in Queens, New York, consisted of Gary Turnier, Eric Matthew, Al Lauricella, Rino Minetti, Bill Catalano, Bob Forman and Jay Leon.
In the UK the act was originally thought to be rock / pop singer, Gary Glitter under another name, as he was known as The Leader of the Gang.

Midnight Express is one hell of a movie to watch one I highly recommend. One of these days I pick up the book and read it. The Chase was a pretty hot song back in '78.
