Coming from a country with national health coverage, watching this debate is unbelievable.
The NHS is by no definition perfect, but the arguments against it are just ridiculous. America is already paying more than anyone else on healthcare, so what is the worst that could happen financially? If money is that a big an issue, I'm sure the US government could cut back military spending without threat to the country's status of 'most powerful'!
I don't see this as a debate about money. Surely looking after sick people who can't look after themselves is the most basic of human instincts?
One of the most shocking arguments I've heard is that there wont be enough doctors. That basically translates to, "there aren't enough doctors for everyone, so we will ration life based on your ability to pay for insurance". Sickening.
The only thing that makes this about money is that we know the politicians standing against it are on the payroll of healthcare companies.
Public health is no more going to turn America communist/fascist/royalist/socialist/etc. than public police or a public fire service.
Maybe I'm missing something.
If it makes the Americans fighting for this feel better, my grandparents have told me they had to go through the same battle to get the NHS. Keep fighting - your grandchildren will thank you!

I guess his family knew him best, but given he was an entertainer, I expected something more like a celebration of his life. Instead I was a bit bored most of time.
Then, out of the blue, Paris was thrown in front of the microphone. When her voice cracked, I only just managed to hold back the tears. I looked at the ceiling and then at my feet, desperately trying to block it out. It was no good - I cried, as did all my housemates.

As much as I rely(ed) on their trackers, I was disliking them more and more towards the end. I can't put my finger on it, but they seemed to be moving towards ESV. Crappy software, crappy site, streaming films, hoards of fanboys, bragging that they are outside USA and declaration of war on MPAA/RIAA.
Maybe ESV with charm.

Wow - shocking news.
All the music channels are only playing MJ music and I was just in town and his music is blearing out of all the clubs and bars.
All top 5 albums on iTunes and 7 of the top 10 are Michael Jackson.
Despite all the tasteless jokes people have been texting me all day, it looks like there is a chance people might remember him for his music.

VirtualBox is a neat bit of software.

Advantages of virtual installation
* The size of the installation doesn't have to be predetermined. It can be a dynamically resized virtual hard drive.
* You do not need to reboot in order to switch between Ubuntu and Windows.
* The virtual machine will use your Windows internet connection, so you don't have to worry about Ubuntu not detecting your wireless card, if you have one.
* The virtual machine will set up its own video configuration, so you don't have to worry about installing proprietary graphics drivers to get a reasonable screen resolution.
* You always have Windows to fall back on in case there are any problems. All you have to do is press the right Control key instead of rebooting your entire computer.
* For troubleshooting purposes, you can easily take screenshots of any part of Ubuntu (including the boot menu or the login screen).
* It's low commitment. If you later decide you don't like Ubuntu, all you have to do is delete the virtual hard drive and uninstall VirtualBox.
* You don't have to burn a CD to install Ubuntu easily.
Disadvantages of virtual installation
* In order to get any kind of decent performance, you need at least 512 MB of RAM, because you are running an entire operating system (Ubuntu) inside another entire operating system (Windows). The more memory, the better. I would recommend at least 1 GB of RAM.
* Even though the low commitment factor can seem like an advantage at first, if you later decide you want to switch to Ubuntu and ditch Windows completely, you cannot simply delete your Windows partition (as you would be able to in a dual-boot situation). You would have to find some way to migrate out your settings from the virtual machine and then install Ubuntu over Windows outside the virtual machine.
* Every time you want to use Ubuntu, you have to wait for two boot times (the time it takes to boot Windows, and then the time it takes to boot Ubuntu within Windows).

As some of you know, the European Directive on email retention came into force a few days ago. Thankfully, it is seriously flawed.
Firstly, I'm sorry but it is goodbye to Outlook and other email software and time to switch to webmail.
Simply add https:// to the start of your webmail address. For example:
(Yahoo defaults to https://)
etc.
This opens a secure connection. Your ISP will see that you are accessing Google's/Yahoo's/MS's servers, but will not know what for.
Of course, the innocent have nothing to hide, so don't forget to prove it by copying in (BCC) Jacqui Smith on all your e-mails ([email protected]).
Please note that your phone calls are still being logged. Given that I can't live without my mobile, I request that all terrorists use Skype or other VOIP. Hopefully when the Home Office realise only innocent people are being caught in the drag net, we will be left alone (yeah, right!)

This is why I like American news. It may not be entirely factual with rumours that some media outlets were in on the hoax, but the entertainment value is second to none. The over-hysterics of the whole event, the 911 call being made publicly available and the sheriff calling the suspect "nutty".
