  1. :rotfl: as only you can phrase something koop! _________ every 25-30 years we seem to go through a reawakening of the importance of the power of the people. sounds so campy and 60's it makes my stomach turn; yet, it is a fact. to sit idly by and offer feeble criticisms is not enough (NOT YOU KOOP..you are VERY active). actively participate in governing YOUR country. for any unfamiliar with how powerful the people can be review the years before the vietnam war ended and what brought it to an end. a quick search on google will supply plenty of info. __________ i'm sure GW is a capable and intelligent man; however, at this point i question his ability to lead/direct this country and its resources as "the people" deem necessary.
  2. nice edit DAIC. they have learned hard work and discipline that perhaps they never would have had otherwise. when they come home they will be head and shoulders above where they might otherwise have been had they not enlisted, at least as far as discipline; maybe, they can put to use what they have learned to further improve their lives and use the GI Bill (if it is still available) for further education. at least we can wish that for them. (a positive view at best) living/visiting another country broadens experience levels regardless of the situation. the circumstances may not be the ideal of a summer vacation but it is what the job requires. at least it is not a vietnam replay at this point. unfortunately, patirotic duty implies defense of what your "country" deems appropriate. enlisting in the military at any point during the last decade ran the risk of being sent into a conflict. there were/are just too many smouldering fires out there for that not to be/remain a reality.
  3. "Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar." -Julius Caesar

  10. personal opinion: it's hard for me to understand where in the movie the Jews are being villified as a group. I felt the movie portrayed/conveyed an overwhelming sense of fear, sadness, and helplessness of a people oppressed not only by conquerors but by their own religious leaders. such mob mentality and strong belief in those holding positions of religious leadership would be difficult to dispel even on the longer term basis of months rather than days. in much the same way that the U.S. is now questioning why, as a nation, we took the "initiative" in Iraq with what may be 'mis'information (not a political comment.. just was a good analogy). time allows the luxury to examine and sort fact from accusation. blame can only come into play if questioning why the populace didn't object to...heinous torture and punishment. NOTE: the torture and punishment were carried out by Roman soldiers (who were obviously known to draw immense--albiet perverted--pleasure in doing so) not the people. if we hold the jews as a people responsible then are all U.S. citizens responsible for not intervening earlier in WWII and thus culpable in Hitlers actions? are all german descendants forever branded as following the Nazi regime? ...you get the idea i've heard the mention of Jewish stereotypes more from Hebrews than from Gentiles. living in the bible belt that is saying quite a lot. there will always be the cadre who hold the Jews as a people responsible for the crucifixtion of Christ. sadly some religious faiths seem to support that belief and i often wonder if that is an "interpretation" or a tenet of the religious dogma. if i were a theological scholar i could address the issues with greater clarity, but i'm not and offer only my opinion. the movie was indeed moving and worthwhile.
  11. QUOTE]I think the American critics go to far, and seem to think that the government represents the point of view of the rest of us - which it doesn't idealistically it should, though we're a far cry from that standard who/what is (a) McGovern? :we don't get it: btw, nice hat and guitar
  12. sorry, i missed this earlier dude. the intent was neither anti-american nor anti-bush sentiments. rather it was a comment upon the attitudes and tactics being used in the "war on terrorism" by the government that represents all US citizens...not just the few. the concern was/is whether the ends justify the means and whether the information we receive is complete.
  13. wonder if the threat is any greater than before 9/11
