  1. any govt mule fans out there? I'm listening to "beautifully broken" from the "deepest end" 2cd, it's a 2003 release, anyways, I'm thinking geez, this sounds like an old classic rock and roll song, hmmmmm, then lightening struck and I realized it's a combination of the prince song " when doves cry" and "beautifully broken". I think, just confused, can they do that? the two songs are meshed kinda, if anyone can take a listen and let me know what you think so I know I'm not going crazy.
  2. "I won't back down/ Gonna stand my ground." Such sentiments must have appealed to Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush, who expressed them by playing Tom Petty's song "I Won't Back Down" during his campaign appearances. Rolling Stone reports that Bush is backing down in a big way after Petty's publisher sent him a cease-and-desist letter. "It has recently come to our attention that your presidential campaign has been using the above-referenced song in connection with your presidential bid," wrote publisher Randall Wixen of Petty's Gone Gator Music publishing company. "Any use made by you or your campaign creates, either intentionally or unintentionally, the impression that you and your campaign have been endorsed by Tom Petty, which is not true." The Bush campaign reluctantly agreed, saying in its response to Wixen's letter that it did not think playing a song by an artist implied any endorsement. Bush spokesman Ray Sullivan told Rolling Stone's Jennifer Vineyard that the campaign was given to playing "what CDs we brought with us that day." So far, the Bush campaign has run afoul of Sting, John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Los Lobos, and Tejano singer Emilio for using their music without permission. Even the more celeb-friendly Democratic Party has found itself in hot water through its choice of soundtrack. Earlier in the year, New York Senate candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton was criticized for playing at a rally Billy Joel's "Captain Jack," which waxes, "Captain Jack will get you high tonight." While Al Gore's supporters scratch their heads trying to remember what they were doing the last time they heard the Call's anthemic "Let the Day Begin," Bush will just have to continue to make do with the sanctioned "We the People." The song is the latest release of once-mulleted country star Billy Ray Cyrus. http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/1436934/09...erty_john.jhtml

  5. I think it would be foolish to believe that those in authority over these soldiers or agents that were interrogators, were completely oblivious to what was going on in these prisons or camps, to believe that would say that the military has lost it's structure, and that the line of command has lost control.
  6. Private spacecraft blast offs June 21 By Leonard David SPACE.com Wednesday, June 2, 2004 Posted: 11:40 AM EDT (1540 GMT) (SPACE.com) -- A privately-developed rocket plane will launch into history on June 21 on a mission to become the world's first commercial manned space vehicle. The pilot of the craft, still to be announced, will become the first person to earn astronaut wings in a non-government sponsored vehicle, and the first private civilian to fly a spaceship out of the atmosphere. That's the word on Wednesday from Scaled Composites in the Mojave, California desert -- designer and builder of SpaceShipOne. The announcement is the first time the group has pre-announced a high-altitude run of its piloted rocketship. Investor and philanthropist Paul Allen and aviation technologist Burt Rutan have teamed to create the program, which will attempt the first non-governmental flight to leave the Earth's atmosphere. read the entire article here: http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/06/02/p...pace/index.html

  9. Driving ban for rock veteran The lead singer of the rock group Deep Purple, Ian Gillan, was banned from driving yesterday after being stopped in his car and found to be more than twice the alcohol limit. The 58-year-old vocalist was seen walking unsteadily to his car near his home in Lyme Regis, Dorset, shortly after midnight on May 22. Police stopped him after he left the Cobb Gate car park and he was found to have 76 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms. Weymouth magistrates banned Gillan, who also sang with Black Sabbath, from driving for 16 months. Gillan, who pleaded guilty, was also fined £500 with £50 costs. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...9/ixhome.html#6

  13. Hollywood Sues Retailer for Piracy By Jim Suhr, AP Business Writer May 28, 2004 ST. LOUIS—Two Hollywood movie studios have sued an online retailer, accusing Technology One of defiantly selling DVD-copying software previously barred by two federal courts. The lawsuit, filed in New York by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. and Paramount Pictures Corp., marks the first time a movie company has sued a retailer of the forbidden software by 321 Studios Inc. Other retailers voluntarily halted sales of the software after federal judges in New York and California—at Hollywood's behest—ordered 321 of suburban St. Louis to stop making and marketing it. Hollywood studios long have insisted that DVD-copying products violate the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which bars circumvention of anti-piracy measures used to protect DVDs and other technology. entire article here: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1603759,00.asp

  15. 'I'm the luckiest man' Letterman feels honored to be part of Indy 500 winning team Posted: Monday May 31, 2004 12:03AM; Updated: Monday May 31, 2004 12:03AM David Letterman is stunned when he realized Buddy Rice was going to drive his car to the Indy 500 title. INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- For David Letterman, watching the team that he co-owns with Bobby Rahal win the Indianapolis 500 was the latest example of how some of the best things in his life have happened since he turned 52. When Buddy Rice won Sunday's race, no one was more proud of the accomplishment than the most famous man in pit lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "When I was 52, I woke up after eight hours of heart surgery -- that's a big deal," said the 57-year-old Letterman. "I had my first son last year, that's a big deal. Now, I'm part of the team that won the Indianapolis 500. Those are three pretty good things to have in your life." Rice gave the famed host of The Late Show on CBS something he dreamed of as a kid, but never in his wildest imagination thought ever would come true. Rice was fearless and relentless, leading the race five times for 91 laps and picking the right time and the right place to score his first career IndyCar victory. Rahal stepped back and allowed his driver to take center stage in victory lane. "I don't belong here," Letterman said. "What am I doing here? It's crazy, absolutely crazy. I'm the luckiest man in the world today, believe me" When Letterman was 52, he already had achieved the peak of stardom in a professional career. He was one of the most famous entertainers on television with a show that is the last thing many viewers see before turning the lights out and heading to bed. But one day he went in for a checkup and before he knew it, he was being rushed into surgery for a quintuple bypass. When he returned to The Late Show the ratings were the highest they had been in six years. Last year, Letterman received what he called his greatest gift with the birth of his son, Harry Joseph, named after his father who had died of a heart attack in his early 50s. Born and raised in the Broad Ripple section of Indianapolis, Letterman was a true fan of the Indianapolis 500. It was something he looked forward to every year with great anticipation. "I guess when I was a kid, there was no Major League Baseball except in Chicago and Cincinnati," Letterman recalled. "We didn't have anything here. So the Speedway became my Major League Baseball. Every month of May, the world would come to you. I can't begin to describe the magic that there was when you were a kid and you just tough it out through these long, lousy Indiana winters. I, of course, lived outside. "Then you get to go out to the Speedway, and there's just this excitement and this drama, and the place is sacred. The greats of the sport have competed here and given their lives here." Letterman forged a friendship with Rahal when the latter was a champion race driver in CART. Rahal won the 1986 Indy 500 and three CART championships. At the beginning of May, Letterman increased his involvement in the team and it was renamed Rahal-Letterman Racing. "I go where Bobby goes, and he tells me what we're going to do and I say, sure, let's do it," Letterman said. "But obviously, in the beginning, it was a disappointment not to be here." Time has a way of healing old wounds and Letterman discovered that he could return to Indy again. "This win today has so many interesting, worthy facets," Letterman said. "Bobby touched on Buddy coming in, getting a good ride. Was there a stronger car in the field today? Was there a stronger driver in the field today? My God, Buddy just would not stop, and it was eating everybody alive. There's something about it, it was I think preordained certainly. You could feel it. You could feel it from the start of the race." Rice's victory put an American driver in victory lane for the first time since Eddie Cheever won in 1998. The 28-year-old Rice has the look of a pit bull and he drove like one on Sunday. "Hopefully it gives people a little bit of a shot in the arm right now," Letterman said. "Hopefully this shows to some of the other kids and some from go-karts to circle track to whatever they are doing, that they can make it here and they can come here and win." Rice drove with the same hard-charging racing style of some of the heroes of Letterman's youth, but the co-owner wasn't about to draw comparisons. "When I was 16, I couldn't make a fist, so, there was not much I could do," Letterman said. "As far as I think the first guy I saw drive this track was a fellow named Bud Tinglestad. Does Buddy remind me of Bud Tingelstad? I don't know." Tingelstad never won the Indy 500 but Letterman has after the latest special moment of his adult life. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/raci...ex.html?cnn=yes

  18. Sudsy brouhaha to court: Miller sues Bud Light Friday, May 28, 2004 Posted: 10:22 PM EDT NEW YORK (CNNfn) -- A brewery brouhaha has shifted from the ad room to the courtroom. Miller Brewing Company filed a lawsuit in Milwaukee District Court Friday against Anheuser-Busch, claiming the rival beer-maker defaced its products and "engaged in false or misleading advertising activities." Miller spokesman Mike Hennick claimed that Bud Light stickers were placed on packages of Miller Lite. In a meeting held Thursday with a Milwaukee federal judge and the two companies, Hennick said that Busch had agreed to investigate and immediately stop any defacing of Miller's products -- if its company employees are actually behind the alleged activity. Miller also accused the St.Louis-based brewery of publishing misleading advertisements that claimed Miller is based in South Africa. One ad that appeared in the May 20 edition of USA Today showed a bottle of Miller Lite with the phrase: "Miller Lite - Queen of Carbs, South African owned," next to it. Hennick said the ad was misleading because SAB Miller is based in London, and South African-based Miller Brewing is only a subsidiary of the company. Miller has launched an aggressive ad campaign in recent months, touting its product as the "President of Beers." One ad features a mock presidential debate with a top Miller official going up against a Clydesdale, the horse made famous by Budweiser. Anheuser-Busch has fought back by reverting to a classic: The lizards in the swamp. In one ad, one of the lizards notes Miller's South African roots, making it ineligible for the presidency. read the article here: http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/05/28/beer.lawsuit/index.html

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- A 96-year-old woman has been arrested on drug charges after sheriff's deputies say they found crack cocaine in her wheelchair. The North Carolina woman says she doesn't know how seven rocks of crack ended up in her wheelchair when sheriff's deputies raided her house. She's charged with possessing crack cocaine with intent to sell and deliver and possessing a crack pipe. A search warrant affidavit says it's the third time deputies have seized cocaine at the woman's home, which she shares with a son. The affidavit says an informant told deputies that she hid crack in her prosthetic leg during a previous search. The woman was released from jail on condition that she appear in court March 30.
