Christmas Songs - 2007 Edition

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again. The Aquarium Drunkard reminded me that blogwise,

TheRealBigRockCandyMountain

is the first place where any Xmas music shopper should go. BigRock has continued his annual tradition of introducing a new (and not to be repeated) Christmas Song every day in December. No question about it, it'sthe hippest Xmas Music universe on the internet, bar none. In fact, the Clarence Carter cut above comes from BigRock.

Since the songs are not repeated, you might also want to check out what The Aquarium Drunkard has for starters.

We put together a pretty good list LAST YEAR, and of course, there was our Redneck Christmas thread, ...but there is always room for improvement.

If you are into traditional Christmas Songs and you want to play along, Chordie's Guitar Tabs, Guitar Chords & Lyrics has a ton of Xmas favorites to call upon.

A fellow member at AskMetafilter has asked to have his Xmas Stocking stuffed with StraightForward Christmas Music and the fine folks there have chimed in with lots of good suggestions.

Darryl Sterden, over at Canoe Jam!, has compiled what he calls The 12 Coolest Christmas Albums Ever!, and I have to agree, his choices looks good and are worth checking out:

12) South Park Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics (1999)

11) Low Christmas (1999)

10) Sufjan Stevens Songs for Christmas (2006)

9) Emmylou Harris Light of the Stable (1979)

8) The Beach Boys The Beach Boys Christmas Album (1964)

7) How the Grinch Stole Christmas Soundtrack (1966)

6) Marah A Christmas Kind of Town

5) Charles Brown Please Come Home for Christmas (1961)

4) Vince Guaraldi A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

3) James Brown Santa's Got a Brand New Bag (1988) Good God!

2) Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr. Christmas With the Rat Pack (2002)

1) Phil Spector A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector (1963)

I'm all for the spirit of Christmas, but I think sometimes that people get carried away - I would have to drink a fifth of vodka to listen to this song the whole way through:

Man, that video was awful. Here's some Christmas cheer which should be a bit more to your liking - Englands's Super Furry Animals - The Gift plan to give away the song on Christmas Day - so bookmark it. (via Stereogum)

The Baltimore Sun explores the dark side of Christmas - bad Xmas music!

This is the season of peace and joy and good will toward men, yet it's also a time when we experience the dark side of the holidays: bad Christmas music.

You hear it in malls, airports, supermarkets, elevators and restaurants. You hear it at office parties and holiday get-togethers, and no amount of spiked eggnog can blot it from your consciousness. It unnerves you. It drains you. You want to run away.

Stereogum has posted a number of Xmas songs that are being given away by artists, including:

Evangelicals - "The Last Christmas On Earth" (MP3)

Danielson - "Christmas Eve Nite" (MP3)

Robbers On High Street - "Seasons Greetings" (MP3)

Frightened Rabbit - "It's Christmas So We'll Stop" (MP3)

Holiday songs always go well with Scotch. "It's Christmas So We'll Stop" is being released as a digital single in the US and a 7" in Europe, via FatCat UK. The B-side is a choral take on the above. Don't play this song when you take the kids to pick out a tree:

Nellie McKay - "A Christmas Dirge" (MP3)

The Polyphonic Spree - "Carol Of The Bells" (MP3)

Snowden - "White Christmas" (MP3)

Sally Shapiro - "Anorak Christmas (Piano Mix)" (MP3)

You can download J. Gale Kilgore's five-song country Christmas EP complete with artwork at Dovecote Records.

Randy Lewis at the LA Times takes a look at this year's holiday releases:

HOLIDAY MUSIC

An earful of glad tidings. This year, several artists have brought something special to a genre that's usually stocked with only the same old chestnuts.

Johnny Cash

"The Johnny Cash Christmas Special 1977" (Shout! Factory)

The Dan Band

"HO: A Dan Band Christmas," (Reincarnate)

Josh Groban

"Noel" (143/Reprise)

Jewmongous

"Taller Than Jesus" (Chow Fun)

Darlene Love

"It's Christmas, of Course" (Shout! Factory)

Raul Malo

"Marshmallow World & Other Holiday Favorites" (New Door/Universal)

Barry Manilow

"In the Swing of Christmas" (Hallmark)

Over the Rhine "Snow Angels" (GSD)

Relient K

"Let It Snow Baby . . . Let It Reindeer" (Capitol)

Mindy Smith

"My Holiday" (Vanguard)

The Staple Singers "The 25th Day of December" (Riverside)

Keith Sweat

"A Christmas of Love" (Rhino)

Taylor Swift

"Sounds of the Season"

(Big Machine/NBC)

Various Artists

"A Very Special Christmas -- the 20th Anniversary Music Video Collection" (A&M)

The dozen videos on this DVD spanning the two decades of this holiday fundraiser for the Special Olympics run from the lo-fi, DIY vibe of Run-DMC's 1987 "Christmas in Hollis" to the artful Impressionism of Sting's "Gabriel's Message" to several Very Special live performances recorded at the Clinton White House. It would be nice to have the years noted for each video, but the clothes and hairstyles often give it away.

Various Artists

Monster Ballads Xmas" (Razor & Tie)

On the heels of last year's Twisted Sister Christmas album comes this collection of holiday standards sprinkled with a few originals as shredded by Queensryche, L.A. Guns, Dokken and other '80s and '90s hair bands. The funny thing is how ideally suited the utterly unself-conscious pomposity of heavy metal is to the grandiosity of these frequently overblown carols.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
