BTEfnet / TVTorrents Alternatives

Recommended Posts

Things haven't been so rosy since BTEfnet was lost. Despite no promised lawsuit ever being issued, the work of the MPAA is done. BTEfnet has been found guilty by the MPAA prosecution, judge and jury - and will be until proven innocent.

In related news, the FBI has pulled their EliteTorrents press statement. Apparently, like their European counterparts who shut down ShareReactor and Youceff Torrents, they have now realised they have been lied to by the MPAA, and there is infact no copyright material to be found on the website servers. When will they learn?

EZTV removed - EZTV are now only releasing through their IRC channel.

Back to topic:

Here is a list of alternatives to using BTEfnet or TV Torrents. It is very weak at the moment, more of a stop gap, but hopefully we will see things improved ready for all the new series this autumn.

I make full use of RSS feeds to make Azureus resemble a TiVO. If you dont use an RSS feed, you may find the list out of order to your preferences!

Mininova - VTV search

The website BTEfnet may have closed, but their operation did not. They simply renamed themselves VTV (Virtual TV) and started to use public trackers and release the torrent files onto torrent dump sites, like Mininova.

Bookmark the above link for best effect. It is like looking at the old BTEfnet homepage, although sadly with less seeds/peers and no completed statistics.

Regrettably, it takes hours for VTV torrents to appear, compared to the minutes it took for them to appear at BTEfnet.

Mininova has an RSS feed here.

Using the RSS feed for Mininova takes more practice and time than for BTEfnet. A filter for "the.thompsons" would suffice for BTEfnet, but with Mininova, you will wake up to find Azureus queuing up "The Thompsons Season 1 DVD Rip", "The Thompsons Seasons 1-9", and the computer game "Thompson's Hit and Run". That's on a day The Thompsons episode you wanted wasn't even on.

So program carefully. Perhaps add VTV to the filter. The Azureus plugin RSS Feed comes with a clever function which works out which episode a release is. Users can then set to download only episodes which fall between set numbers. Clever and well worth using.

CTV

Smaller version of BTEfnet, with the main TV shows.

Has an RSS feed [http://www.centraltracker.org/rss/]

The site does lack content, where rarer programs seem to be available.

Also lacks information, such as file size and format.

Lots of potential, not much living up to it yet.

TorrentSpy - TV Directory

TorrentSpy has, by far, the most TV content. It is also thought VTV publish their torrents here.

However, it comes third as it is nothing like BTEfnet. It has no RSS feed which can be used by the Azureus plugns and it takes some setting up to create a nice list of new episodes.

Not to say it cannot be done.

i) Goto www.torrentspy.com

ii) Search for VTV

iii) Click "Sort by: Seeders" at the top of the results

iv) Set preferences to sort by date and save.

Next time you search for VTV, the newer the episode, the closer to the top.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
