A year ago, after he ended his role as the Governator and began his action star comeback phase, Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he was shopping around a new "Terminator" film to the major studios with him back in the lead role.

Though he may not be as closely associated with the robot from our post-apocalyptic future as Schwarzenegger, James Cameron played an equally essential role in bringing the first two films to life. When MTV News spoke with director, he opened up about advising Schwarzenegger on a future "Terminator" film.

"I was talking to him back in fall about a new 'Terminator' film and quietly advising on that, I suppose you could say," he said.

Cameron told Schwarzenegger that he should not proceed with the proposed fifth film of the series unless it shifted the focus onto the character of the T-800.

"I was trying to be as encouraging as possible. Frankly, at that time, I thought it needed to be more about him," Cameron said. "I told him he should not do it until it's focused on his character or he shouldn't do it. I think there are some great stories that can be told about that character that haven't even been thought of yet."

It's unclear where "Terminator 5" stands at the moment. "Fast Five" director Justin Lin was originally attached to helm, but he dropped out of the project last September.
