The MTV Movie Brawl 2012 is officially underway! But before you vote for the movie you're anticipating most in the coming year, why not familiarize yourself with all of the players?

Over the next few days, we'll be highlighting the 32 movies currently competing in the Brawl, eight flicks per day. Today's first look includes a trip to Gotham City, a voyage aboard a battleship and a vampire tale that has nothing to do with "Twilight."

Do you buy Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as high school teenagers? We don't either, but we can't wait to see them try to pull it off. Hill and Tatum's resurrection of the '80s teen cop drama as a hard R-rated action comedy seems like an odd move, but that first trailer has us more than a little bit eager to see the laughs they have in store for us. "The Amazing Spider-Man"
It's only been five years since the last film of Sam Raimi's take on your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but we're getting a new cast, director and origin story anyway. Now it's Andrew Garfield's turn to pull on the red-and-blues, but this time he's vying for the affection of a blonde, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and fighting the Lizard. -Kevin P. Sullivan

"American Reunion"
Years have passed, babies have been had, and Tara Reid remains a loony as ever: everything and nothing has changed for the kids of East Great Falls as they gather for their high school reunion. A decade after the last watchable flick in the franchise hit theaters, the US of A is finally ready to munch on some more "Pie." Jim, don't let us down. -Eric Ditzian

Hot guys, a major pop star and naval warfare! Oh my! “Battleship” pretty much has something for everyone, including a touch of childhood nostalgia. The board-game-to-big-screen adaptation is set to blast its way into theaters come May and there hasn’t been a movie since “Clue” that we’ve been more excited to see take it from the board to the Cineplex. "The Bourne Legacy"
Jeremy Renner picks up the amnesiac-super-spy reins where Matt Damon left off in this expansion of the action series. Expect some familiar faces and a similar storyline but with a new leading man trying to figure out who he is. -KPS

"The Dark Knight Rises"
Maybe you've heard of this one. It's about a guy who dresses up like a bat and fights crime or something. Easily one of the biggest releases of this or any year, "The Dark Knight Rises" will end Christopher Nolan's story of the Batman in a hopefully epic fashion. -KPS

"Dark Shadows"
Truth be told, we’re pretty much sold on any movie that re-teams Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton, no matter the subject. The fact that their next project, 2012’s “Dark Shadows” is a movie version of a campy 1970s vampire soap opera, and features the all-star cast including Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Michelle Pfieffer, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Hayley, Chloe Grace Moretz and Jonny Lee Miller, well, it should be easy to see why we’ve been psyched about this film since it was announced. -Kara Warner

"The Dictator"
If Sacha Baron Cohen's real-life, in-character, pitch-perfect statement on the death of Kim Jong Il — "He did so much to spread compassion, wisdom and uranium throughout the world" — is any indication, SBC has another cinematic winner on his hands. This time around, the comedian slips into the authoritarian boots of a general from the fictional Republic of Wadiya, a guy who enjoys jamming out to Jay-Z, sleeping with Megan Fox, and shooting anyone who gets in his way. What a way to kick off the summer movie season. -ED

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
