'The Machine' in Action to X-Ray Suspects

By Nick Allen, Crime Correspondent, PA News

Scotland Yard tonight deployed its latest weapon in the war on crime – a scanner which sees through suspects’ clothes.

The £120,000, 500kg X-ray device, dubbed “the Machine”, was driven into a busy London high street on an articulated lorry.

It was used in a massive operation against drug dealers and was part of a 160-metre convoy of vehicles which took over the main road in Harlesden, north London.

The road, a major thoroughfare in the capital, was immediately closed off to the public with major traffic diversions.

The operation began at 9.40pm as 400 police officers targeted two pubs – the Elm Tree and the Palm Shade bar frequented by members of the Jamaican Lock City Crew Gang.

As the pubs were raided about 200 people were inside both buildings.

Officers, who were not armed but were wearing bullet-proof vests and helmets, held a number of people inside the pubs.

As the vehicle convoy – dubbed “Search City” – then moved in suspects were brought out.

The convoy included three articulated lorries each carrying a container with electricity, heating and running water.

Suspects were being given the option of a strip search inside the containers or they could opt to stand in front of the new body scanner.

The 7ft high machine shows an image of the suspect minus his or her clothes on a monitor.

Male officers monitor male suspects and women are monitored by female officers.

It shows up anything hidden under the clothes, including metal, plastic or ceramic guns, wooden clubs and coshes, explosives or drugs.

The scanner, used for the first time in the UK on a police raid, uses low radiation X-rays which penetrate one tenth of an inch into the skin.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
