As this is my first post here, I thought I would create a topic that could lead to some real discussion. I recently read a book called Lords of Chaos, which chronicles the rise of the Black Metal Scene in Norway and Sweden in the 90's. This of course covered the many church burnings and other anti-christian acts. Specifically, it focused on the Members of Mayhem, and the one man band Burzum.

This led me to wonder what others thought about this whole thing. What are your opinions on the music produced during those times, the people who made it, and their actions? Anyways, I am glad to be at Beat King, I signed up a long time ago, but kind of forgot about. Now I'm here!

Welcome to Beatking, Sifor. What I've heard of the Black Metal Scene sounds pretty progressive musically, but I'm otherwise clueless. I definitely wouldn't buy into their message - has there been damage socially?

LOTD and BMC are the resident experts here on metal ... curious as to their thoughts

Here is some sample videos from the bands:

Burzum - Dunkelheit

Mayhem - Chainsaw Gutsfuck

Varg Verkines, AKA Burzum, is actually currently serving a 21 year sentence, the most sever possible under Norwegian law, for the murder of friend and member of Mayhem, and 3 church arsons. Not a very nice guy. He's pretty crazy, actually. Although he is a very talented musician. Thanks for the warm welcome!

For one, he is completley crazy. He recently converted to Odinism, and add a name his family hasnt used since Viking days. Recently, when he was denied parole, he was allowed to go free for one to be with friends and family. He dissapeared. When they finally caught him, he was in a stolen car with several loaded assault rifles, pistols and shot guns, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. For that 13 months was added to his sentence. Here's a Wikipedia page on him: http://en.wikipedia....i/Varg_Vikernes

I really haven't read the wikipedia page. The only Metal Documentary I know of is Metal: A Headbangers Ball, and I have seen that one, but it's been a few years. I know they have a part focusing on Black Metal, although I don't recall the specifics. Why?

I actually had the Mayhem CD he participated in. Never did any research into the character though. I do recall it being a very dark, black album...not very coherent.

I no longer have it for reasons I am not certain of. All I can guess is that it basically sucked and I questioned myself as to why I was keeping it. I think i pawned it, actually. It just had no musical value for me.

Which brings me to why I even had it in the fisrt place.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas indeed.

You should pick up the fairly new Burzum Anthology. It's basically a summary of all his music. It's really good.
