Townes Van Zandt was a country-folk music singer-songwriter, performer and poet, who passed away in 1997. His songs have been covered by Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Merle Haggard, Hoyt Axton, Tindersticks, Devendra Banhart, Norah Jones, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, The Be Good Tanyas, and the Dixie Chicks.

Steve Earle says that "Townes van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and he'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that."

This song appears on the "For the Sake of the Song" album, which was first released in 1968. The video is from Heartworn Highway, a documentary directed by James Szalapski.
