Tips For Touring Artists

Recommended Posts

Drummer Martin Atkins (Public Image Ltd., Killing Joke, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails) has written a book, 'Tour: Smart', which is a primer for touring bands. He recently spoke with Andrea Seabrook of NPRs All Things Considered about the book.

"The basic rule that I'm finding now," Atkins says, "is I'm trying to let everyone know that they are completely and totally screwed. But if they can just accept that fact, then they might not be."

NPR also outlines one of the more important chapters, "Marketing IV — 61 Strategies For A More Successful Show:"

1. Give your ticket-buying fans plenty of time to commit.

2. Tour within a reasonable time of a new release.

3. Create Your Own Event!

4. Play the right venue.

5. Play the right venue on the right night!

6. Play where your fans are.

...and more

You can listen to the entire show at All Things Considered.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
