Fans Cheer Garth Brooks in Ball Tryout

Thu Mar 11, 8:33 PM ET

PEORIA, Ariz. - Country music star Garth Brooks (news) had fans on their feet and cheering Thursday, but it wasn't because of his singing.

Brooks singled during a spring training game in his latest tryout for a professional baseball team. The hit boosted Brooks to 2-for-42 in spring training games for the San Diego Padres, New York Mets and Royals. He is 1-for-3 this spring.

"I was even more surprised than the pitcher," said Brooks, whose only previous hit was a single in 1999.

Fans cheered, and someone flipped the ball to the 42-year-old Brooks as he removed his helmet and left for a pinch runner. He was limping slightly, saying later that he had aggravated a hamstring he initially pulled last week.

Brooks is trying out for the Kansas City Royals, who lost 10-7 to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.

Brooks came in as a pinch hitter against left-hander Mike Myers (news) in the ninth inning, hitting a grounder to shortstop Adam Jones (news). The rookie covered some ground up the middle to field the ball, and first baseman Dave Hansen could not quite make the catch.

I read an interview with Brooks a few days ago. He was saying that the opposing pitchers really bring their shit when he's at the plate because nobody wants the wannabe to make them look foolish.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
