The Perfect Metal CD

If you could put together a CD of 15 your favorite songs - songs that you like so well, that you could listen to this one CD over and over again if you were stranded on an island - what songs would your CD have.

There's a catch: the CD has to be metal, and you can only have one song from any given artist.

Here's mine (songs listed in alphabetical order, but only 'cause that's how they are on my hard drive):

01. Amorphis - Divinity

02. Angel Dust - Addicted to Serenity

03. Armored Saint - Creepy Feelings (from the Nod To The Old School CD)

04. Brainstorm - The Leading

05. Dokken - Mr. Scary

06. Iced Earth - Dracula

07. Jag Panzer - Black

08. Judas Priest - Green Manalishi (the live version from Unleashed in the East)

09. Megadeth - Lucretia

10. Metallica - Fade To Black

11. Pagan's Mind - A New Beginning

12. Riot - Twist of Fate

13. Steel Prophet - One Way Out

14. Tad Morose - When The Spirit Rules The World

15. Twelfth Gate - Waiting In Shadows

(ok...this is only a cheap ply to see what kinda stuff everyone else likes, and to maybe get some ideas on new stuff to look for, so don't be shy)

TOO much was removed from my list. These days, one disc would hold hundreds of songs. I won't settle for anything less. Shoot, I'll use Sony's ATRAC technology and place up to 490 songs on one disc. I should do that just in case. BUt here is my minimalist best:

Chastain - "Night of Anger"

Disturbed - "Prayer"

Dream Theater - "Pull Me Under"

Fates Warning - "Monument"

Fear Factory - "Securitron (police state 2000)"

Iron Maiden - "Alexander the Great"

Judas Priest - "Painkiller"

Megadeth - "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due"

Metallica - "For Whom The Bell Tolls"

Ozzy Osbourne - "Crazy Train"

Pantera - "Shedding Skin"

Savatage - "Hall of the Mountain King"

Slayer - "Seasons in the Abyss"

System of a Down - "Chop Suey"

Tool - "Sober"

Tool - "Ænima"

Killswitch Engage - "The End of Heartache"

Lost Prophets - "Kobrakai"

Otep - "Blood Pigs"

Yesterday's Rising - "Time Holds the Truth"

Breaking Benjamin - "Away"

Chimaira - "Implements of Destruction"

Dream Theater - "Home"

Sevendust - "Bitch"

Helmet - "Unsung"

Ill Nino - "How Can I Live"

Jim Dofka - "S & V"

EverytimeIdie - "Elaborama"

Mudvayne - "Prod"

You have no idea how hard it is for me to pick 15 out of 10,000+

The only way I can do this is to limit it to Viking Metal:

Amon Amarth - The Sound of Eight Hooves

Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay

Doomsword - Resound the Horn: Odin's Hail

Einherjer - Dragon's of the North

Ensiferum - Battle Song

Enslaved - Eld

Falkenbach - Vanadis

Manegarm - Vinternattskväde

Mithotyn - King of the Distant Forest

Nachtfalke - Einherjer (Doomed to Die)

Stormwarrior - Óðinn's Warriors

Thyrfing - A Moment in Valhalla

Tyr - Ormurin Langi

Unleashed - To Asgaard We Fly

Valhalla - The Sword of my Father

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
