Today's feature podcast from KCRW features the cool electronic and melodic sounds of The Submarine's 'Peace & Hate' from the album 'Declare A New State!'.

Listen to song or watch the video session

Like the White Stripes, the Submarines are a couple's band. The couple in question in this case are Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti, who like the White Stripes, are no longer a couple. According to the Music For Robots blog which I'm liberally taking from, "she worked out of Boston at the Fort Apache studio ( Morphine, Pixies, Helium, Belly and Lemonheads), while John released albums on the HepCat label, Sugar Free, and A&M. He toured under the name Jackdrag with serious-indie-cred bands like Cibo Matto and Built To Spill.

"Anyway, after four years of this, they decided to move to LA to "persue their love of traffic and earthquakes"... The result is what you're hearing here - pretty, sad songs about love..."

7/17/06 Tom Verlaine 'From Her Fingers' from the album 'Songs and Other Things'

Listen to the song

According to Wikipedia, Tom Verlaine is a singer, songwriter and guitarist, and is often regarded as one of the most talented performers of the early punk rock era. He is probably best-known for his trailblazing work as the singer and guitarist for the seminal New York punk band Television, but has also carved out an acclaimed and eclectic solo career.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
