Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen (1984)

Springsteen wrote most of these songs in a fit of inspiration that also gave birth to the harrowingNebraska. "Particularly on the first side, it's actually written very much like Nebraska," he said. "The characters and the stories, the style of writing -- except it's just in the rock-band setting." It was a crucial difference: The E Street Band put so much punch into the title song that millions misheard its questioning allegiance as mere flag-waving. The immortal force of the album is in Springsteen's frank mix of soaring optimism and the feeling of, he said, being "handcuffed to the bumper of a state trooper's Ford."

Total album sales: 15 million

Peak chart position: 1

Had a class at UCLA on Concert Promotion--Jim Rissmiller, the biggest promotor in LA at that time, took us to the forum for a Springsteen Concert, and we had a discussion with the manager, watched the whole production set up from beginning to end. Then he gave us box seats with the Charlie Daniels Band.

Springsteen was on top of the world that night...

i love this site!!!!!! You have Springsteen, too! I don't know why, but I always confuse Billy Joel's "uptown girl... with Dancin' in the Dark--maybe it's because of that babe that dances i the crowd and then joins Springsteen on stage... whoaaaa, she seems like an uptown girl.....!" lol. (Thanx Desdemona for setting me straight)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
