Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Score New Viggo Mortensen Film Far From Men

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who've played together in the Bad Seeds and Grinderman, have added another film soundtrack to their long list of credits. They've scored French director David Oelhoffen's Far From Men (Loin des Hommes), a movie that stars Viggo Mortensen and is based off an Albert Camus short story. The movie will be released in theaters in the U.S. on May 1 and on video on demand on April 14, while the soundtrack will be out May 19 via Bad Seeds Ltd.

"Very often a tension can happen between music and picture that is about chance and a kind of unknowingness that can be really amazing," Cave said in a press release. "Just by putting together two things that were created in isolation, music and film, suddenly something quite magical can happen."

The score is largely sourced from a collection of violin loops recorded by Ellis. "It was suddenly an amazing way to write because you didn’t have to do things from scratch," Cave said. "Warren would put on a loop that would create this instant atmosphere, and we could go off and work on top of that. To sit at a piano, put chords onto a linear loop and make something out of that is just an easy and very pleasurable way to work."

Previously, Cave and Ellis collaborated on the scores for 2005's The Proposition, 2007's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, 2009's The Road, and 2012's Lawless, among other projects. Some of this music was compiled for 2009's White Lunar.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
